十岁的菲利克斯住在一家由修女开办在山顶上的孤儿院已有三年零八个月了。他坚信他的父母依然活着，会来接他回家，并且一家人重新过上幸福的生活。但当一群德国纳粹分子冲进孤儿院烧毁书籍的时候，菲利克斯开始担心有着犹太身份、靠卖书为生的父母的性命。
为此菲利克斯逃出了孤儿院，独自找寻自己父母的下落。在当时，纳粹党人已经控制了波兰全境，全力捕捉并绞杀犹太人。菲利克斯只能一边躲避纳粹的追捕，一边偷偷打听自己父母的消息。他在一场大火中救出了一个叫塞尔达的小女孩，随后两个人展开了一段共同逃亡的冒险旅程。
