Hi Beth,
Sorry for the late homework, i’m writing the other but I’ve had a busy week..
But anyways, here is my homework for this week!
Why should we be more understanding of one and another?
Our world is developing at a rapid pace. Cultures are being forgotten, becoming more separated. Some countries becoming much richer than other. BUT we must remember we are all human beings and that we are all equal and should accept each other n matter the differences. Today, I’m going to talk about acceptance between cultures.
First of all, we need to know and understand what ‘culture’ is. Culture, defined by google, is: ‘the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society’. That’s an overall summary, so let’s break it down a bit, into three categories, ideas, customs and social behaviour. Ideas, it’s a very broad term, basically, it’s one’s viewpoint on the world. You will find that different people share different ideas, one of the most popular or obvious ideas is the disliking of another. An example on viewpoint, the Americans dislike China, not for any actual reason though. Other than having different ideas on the world, they both have mutual interests. A typical case on customs and social behavior might be, greeting people, Japanese people are really formal and serious about manners but in Australia it’s very friendly, “G’day mate!” So this all comes down to cultural differences.
We should be understanding about everyone’s differences. Humans are beings whom like to be in groups. If one does not connect with any for a long time, we will feel lonely. That’s why we socialize and make friends. But, how DO we make friends and social circles? Well, normally we tend to favour people whom have similar interests, hobbies or aims. People who are similar and relatable. Now this is where it gets slightly complicated. Sometimes, someone could make friends with another who does not share the same culture or beliefs, but this does not mean they automatically become off-limits. Yes, sometimes you will find that you guys will argue with each other, but you’d find that people who have more friends of different background often have a wider and more ‘free’ opinion on the world and those around them. This creates a peaceful-er co-existence. Having more friends also means you will be less lonely, but you can only achieve this if you tolerate and accept other’s differences.
Being more understanding might be difficult at times, but here are a few tips on how you could understand each other more. First of all, don’t prejudice. A questionnaire has shown results that over half of the people one pre-judges end up totally different than what they thought. Secondly, IF you already dislike a religion or culture, but one of your friends is from that specific background, either, don’t be friends with them or don’t talk about it if you have such strong emotions against it. Thirdly, and lastly, keep your true feelings on anything hidden, you can tell people whom your really close friends with that you know will understand you, but overall, don’t shout out the fact that you dislike something to the world. It will create more enemies than allies.
I think that if we could understand each other more, this could impact our country and society greatly. Forming more alliances and friendships give you more power. It also creates, as I said before, a more peaceful co-existence which decrease political and social problems.
My last point is that I hope you all keep on celebrating your own culture, your music, arts and food. For technology is taking over a lot of things we used to do and is erasing hundreds and thousands of years of history. Please remember your origins and what really matters.
Thank you for listening and I hope you have a splendid afternoon my friends.
