In lines 7, when describing the brook, the writer uses the metaphor ‘half choked’. Explain why you think the writer has used this metaphor and what image it presents to the reader. (2 marks)
I believe the author has used this phrase to emphasise the fact that the beck was full of flowers and overwhelmingly covered. It presents an image of picturesqueness and allure because ‘Kingcups, watercress and blue brooklime’ conveys the tranquility and colour the reader has in mind.

Re-read the first two paragraphs. How does the writer create a sense of peacefulness in this section? You should make direct reference to the language/imagery within by using quotations. (4 marks)
Firstly, the author makes sure that the sentences are long and stretched so it will make a calm scene, not snappy and curtailed ( that will only occur in horror or mystery stories). Secondly, the phrase ‘along the brook, all was plain to be seen, empty and quiet’ shows the placidness and more of a peaceful atmosphere so that the reader would have a settled mind, unlively, and plain. Lastly, the author creates a sense of peace by putting characters that belong in a settled atmosphere to give the reader an opportunity to enjoy the scene of the rabbits, which are small and quiet.

Below are three adjectives which describe the first rabbit; find one quotation to support each word between lines 22-29: (3 marks)

      Streetwise
‘there was a shrewd, buoyant air about him’

      Wise
‘he looked as if he knew how to take care of himself’

      Cautious
‘looked around and rubbed both front paws over his nose. As soon as he was satisfied that all was well, he laid back his ears and set to work on the grass.’

Based on information from the passage, using your own words, describe the second rabbit (lines 30-35). (3 marks)
The second rabbit was very young and wasn’t as vigilant as the first even though he was rather attentive with things he can see. Also, he is zestful and enthusiastic as he was spinning around and jumping about excitedly, unlike the first one, who was rather earnest in a way. Lastly, he is the rabbit that couldn’t keep still so that was the reason he was jumping around, chasing a bee which shows his enthusiasm and rejoice.

Explain why the second rabbit is given the name ‘Fiver’: (1 mark)

The rabbit’s name was Fiver because he was the youngest one and he was the fifth one in the litter of rabbits.

When Hazel says to Fiver, in lines 44-45, “If you can’t find one, no one can”, what does this tell us about Fiver? (2 mark)

This shows that he is an intelligent and a rabbit who is full of sagacity because the fact that Hazel said no one else can find a cowslip if you can’t means that everyone else is less smarter than  Fiver so if he can’t find one, than no one can.

Looking at the passage as a whole, how does the writer present elements of nature and what impression of the setting do you think he is trying to get across to the reader? You should support your argument with quotations and try to comment on the writer’s use of language, paying particular attention to any language features you recognise. (6 marks)

      The Clown Punk

      by Simon Armitage

Driving home through the shonky side of town,

Three times out of ten you’ll see the town clown,

Like a basket of washing that got up

And walked, towing a dog on a rope. But

Don’t laugh: every pixel of that man’s skin

Is shot through with indelible ink:

As he steps out at the traffic lights,

Think what he’ll look like in thirty years’ time –

The deflated face and shrunken scalp

Still daubed with the sad tattoos of high punk.

You kids in the back seat who wince and scream

When he slathers his daft mush on the windscreen,

Remember the clown punk with his dyed brain,

Then picture windscreen wipers, and let it rain.

How many different types of punctuation does the poet use in this poem? (1 mark)

The poet uses: a comma, a full stop, colon and a dash, which means there are 4 different types of punctuation.

What do you think the poet means by the phrase “the shonky side of town” (line 1)? (2 marks)
The poet means that ‘the shonky side of the town’ is the portion that is low quality and bad.

What interests you about the structure and form of the poem? You could talk about line breaks, rhyme, meter, stanza length, and explain the effects achieved. (3 marks)
I find the first stanza appealing as it is encouraging the reader to think that the ‘shonky side of the town’ is fun as there is a ‘ town clown’ everywhere you go. Also, the whole poem gives the reader a zealous feeling because the author is creating a frivolous atmosphere and a sense of laughter. The author additionally adds a lively and  rhythmic rhythm and beat to emphasise the joy the ‘town clown’ is creating.

In your own words, explain how the speaker feels towards the town clown. (2 marks)
I think the narrator feels engaged towards the clown as it looked unique and funny and did weird things on people’s window screen. Secondly, the speaker is probably admired by the clown as it was describing the things drawn on the clown’s face and the peculiar actions the dog and the clowns were doing. For instance, the dog was walking on a tightrope.

What interests you about the language used in the poem? Use some examples and explain what effects are achieved. You could talk about word choice, literary techniques and imagery. (4 marks)

The language and the rhyme makes a fun experience for the speaker and the narrator uses… ( I haven’t finished)

Name one theme that you think this poem explores and give evidence for your answer (2 marks)
Zealous, because the fact the way the narrator has described the clown and the atmosphere around them shows the enthusiasm and exuberance.

      Hi Beth,

I still can’t attached my work. I have to put here.

Homework: Why did Gleitzman choose to tell this story? OR Why is it still important that we learn and talk about the Holocaust? Explain your answer with reference to the text and the wider context of the book, remember to use quotations and language analysis.

We learn about holocaust because we need to know how miserable and how pitiful it is to be in the holocaust. It can also teach us a lesson that we have to take care of what we have right now and not in the olden times. It tells us the importance of our lives and that we should pray to the people who has gone through these things and hope them to survive because some children haven’t gone through many things like having ample education and going to nature like their parents. It teaches us what things can kill you and what things don’t so we can protect ourselves. If you are really lazy and does literally nothing you don’t learn you don’t know how to do anything and suddenly there was a war in were you live, you won’t know what to do and how to defend yourself.
So that is why you have to talk and learn about holocaust!
      Many thanks,

      Huayi

      Hi Beth,

Attached below is my homework for (Lesson 2 )Tom’s Midnight Garden and lesson 1 which I didn’t attach it successfully, I put all together. Please check it!

Tom’s midnight garden lesson 1 Homework: ‘What does Tom’s Midnight Garden say about the process of growing up?’ OR ‘What does Tom’s Midnight Garden say about the passage of time?’. Explain your answer with reference to the text and the wider context of the book, remember to use quotations and language analysis.

Hatty says that she like and wants to grow up in the story because she wanted to be like all of her cousins to be able to climb tricksy, to be able to swarm and learn to do things that her cousins can do. She couldn’t do it because her cousins mentioned that Hatty was too young and she she isn’t strong enough so she longed to grow up so she could climb those trees and learn to swamp
(Which Tom taught her before she grew up) and be strong like them. To me personally,I do agree about the book because she actually long to grow up but because of Tom’s kindness, she did learn to do the things she wanted to learn when she got older so Hatty told him lots of secrets about the garden and things that happened to her for payback.

Tom’s midnight garden lesson 2 Homework: ‘How important is perspective in Tom’s Midnight Garden’ OR ‘Is Tom ever really travelling through time?’. Explain your answer with reference to the text and the wider context of the book, remember to use quotations and language analysis.

No because at the end of the story Mrs Bartholomew told Tom that all of the adventures that Tom has gone through was Mrs Bartholomew’s dreams and admiration of the past. Also in the book they did mention that at the end Tom suddenly realised that it was all a magical dream that was linked with what Mrs Barthomew was dreaming about when she was a little girl. Even though it did sound that he was travelling through time but he actually isn’t. Let’s say that some books don’t tell you the actual secret about the book till you get to the end of the story. I personally  think that he did kind of   travel through time because he did go through to when Mrs Barthomew was a little girl and discovered a lot about the Victorians. It included in the book that when Hatty was a young lady, she made a promise to Tom that she will keep her skates in her secret hideout underneath the floorboards in her bedroom and left a letter there where she had dated the letter and said “18..” which means it’s the 18th century and that is 200 years ago from 2020! Victorians were ages ago when queen Victoria was queen! Since that was a loooooong time ago, that was made me think that he did travel through time to an another amazing time of world.

      Thanks,

      Huayi
