ParticipantHi Beth, this is my homework:
The moral of this story is to have the power of friendship and loyalty. In life, you’ll need friends to help you when you struggle. For example, when Bonnie was fighting for her mother, she got herself locked up in a closet. When Miss Slighcarp left the room, instead of staying seated, Sylvia comforted Bonnie and risked herself to argue against Miss Slighcarp. In the text, it says, “Don’t cry, Bonnie, please don’t cry. I’ll run after her and beg her to let you out.” This shows that Sylvia’s loyalty is really strong and she’s admired at Bonnie’s protest. Also, when Sylvia was sick, Bonnie treated her with an egg. In the book, it says, “It’s not much, but at least it’s nourishing and warm!” As Sylvia was flushed, coughing and dreadfully weak, many girls wouldn’t want to be near her but, as Slyvia and Bonnie have such a powerful bond, Bonnie cared for her and risked her life and took an egg. It’s great to have at least one great bonding with a friend in life, because if a loved one is not there for you, you can rely on your best friend.

Question: What is the importance of this quote in the book?
Answer: The importance of this quote is that it conveys the animals’ thinking and how it will affect the plot of the story. The quote, “Four legs good, two legs bad,” tempts the reader to read on as they would want to know how the leader treats the different animals and the author might be putting a twist in the story to make the plot unexpected. This will surprise the readers and it will make the plot line intriguing to read.
Question: Think about the idea of collective perspective and try to apply it to other groups of animals, i.e the pigs and horses. What can we learn from analysing Orwell’s characters collectively?
Answer: We can learn about Orwell’s characters that they make a good team. In the text, it says, “All the animals nodded in complete agreement,” which conveys the immense amount of trust for the leader and every member. Some animals like Boxer or Squealer trust their leader thoroughly even if things get suspicious, for example when Napoleon starts killing other animals by using dogs. Others like Molly or Snowball betray the team and form into a member for their enemies. Trust in the leader was not always great as Napoleon committed terrible deeds, therefore members started to feel scared and insecure. Also, the animals look out for each other as when Boxer was driven away, the animals realized that he was about to get slaughtered so they put in lots of effort to get his attention by shrieking and running to catch the van up. They could have just dumped Boxer but as they are a team, they tried to save him. Every animal that was loyal to the team showed up and but their strength and effort into producing the incredible windmill, and even though it was destroyed, they didn’t give up. They were determined to build another one no matter the consequences.

“Remind me, what are we doing here again?” asked Oliver. “For the one millionth time, we are here to destroy the most powerful jewel in the entire universe!” cried out Lily exasperated. She rolled her eyes. “Look, there’s a group of ladies there with children! Let’s go and ask where their leader is!” suggested Sam. The three kids dashed down the emerald green hill to the group. “Excuse me, could you kindly guide me to the main office please,” questioned Lily. “Do you have a kid and why are these boys doing here?” interrogated a plump lady. “Pftt, and why do YOU need to know?” interrupted Sam. The trio suddenly noticed that the offended lady’s eyes were turning into a blazing red colour. Oliver pretended that he forgot something and the petrified trio ran away. “Why on earth did you say that for, Sam! Didn’t you read the book I told you to read? Aarggh! This planet’s rule is that men aren’t allowed and all women have to give birth to a girl! I was about to improvise when you interrupted!” uttered Lily. A deafening silence suffocated the three children. “What are ….. the.. the.. consequences?” stammered Sam slowly. “I don’t want to talk about it! It’s gruesome!” whispered Lily. “ Few things guys. Number one, we need to accomplish our mission, number two, that lady is still staring at us and number 3, RUN!” uttered Oliver.

ParticipantBeth, this is my homework:
Erika: Welcome to the interview Madeleine L’engle. I’m going to ask you a few questions. So, what gave you the inspiration to write this book?
ML: Sergei Krikalev inspired me to write this book. Lots of children wonder about time traveling and I thought that if I used time travelling as my solution then the book would be very intriguing to read and it would teach them to always be curious and they can discover fascinating things that they thought were impossible.
Erika: Ok. When you tell people not to think when they write, is it because of the scientist? Why do you follow his story?
ML: No, I follow his story because I can feel that God wants me to. The scientist’s story has shown that without your stressful thinking, life will be easy as ideas or thoughts. I want to help the people around me by sharing that message.
Erika: Final question. Where did you get the idea of the characters and their names?
ML: Firstly, a key ingredient in writing a story is adding characters, as it makes the storyline more tense and exciting. I selected the names from literary, religious and symbolic sources.
Erika: Well, that’s the end of the interview. Thank you for your wonderful responses.

Hidden Cruelty
Beads of dew welcomed the morning sun as it rose above the towering buildings. “Oi, what do you think you’re doing here?” yelled Mr Fiddlesticks as he jostled up to the metal gates with a few workers. Jack and Jill were huddling together on the stony steps to the gates. Having courage, Jack stood up. “Please sir, we are orphans, we are looking for a job.”
“OUT, you orphans are just rascals!” spat Mr Fiddlesticks. This time Jill stood up. “Please sir, please let us try.” pleaded the exhausted girl. Mr Fiddlesticks sighed deeply, hesitated then replied gruffly, “Fine, but if you fail working hard, your out!” Before long, the orphans learnt everyone’s names, knew what job they had to do, and now knew it was an iPhone factory.
One elegant evening, Jack was polishing the colossal creaky machines and Jill scrubbing the floor clean. Jack and Jill were confused as to why Mr. Fiddlesticks wanted the factory to be impeccable. Usually, he didn’t really care how filthy the factory was. Unexpectedly, Jack and Jill heard some workers whispering and muttering. The ragged orphans nodded and then sidled towards the closed door. They took turns spying in the keyhole and pressing their ears on the solid door. This was the conversation; “We have to tell the kids” protested a worker. “Yes, yes, yes” agreed the rest. “NO” rang out Mr Fiddlesticks, “Let’s end the meeting here and give them the surprise tomorrow. As the muddling news enveloped them, Jack and Jill overheard someone turning the handle. They hurtled themselves back to their places. Nothing was suspected.
A moment later, a beautiful young lady briskly walked in. With hazelnut brown hair, comforting eyes, and a firm mouth. “I wonder who she is,” whispered Jill to her brother. He shrugged his shoulders. Surprisingly, Mr Fiddlesticks heard Jill. He crouched down to the kids and replied, “This is Charlotte.” As an eerie silence draped over the kids, Charlotte was having a discussion about the orphans and how they ended up here. Soon enough, Charlotte led the kids outside. “Hello, my name is Charlotte and I am Mr Fiddlesticks wife. He told me all about you. We were wondering if you would appreciate us to adopt you.” Smiling, they energetically nodded. “It would just have a little of paperwork but that’s it really,” spoke Charlotte. Sneakily, Mr. Fiddlesticks stepped out of the dark shadows. His eyes sparkled with delight. Without even communication, they did a family hug. Happiness connected through everyone’s souls.

Tragedy and Disappearance
Outside was a starry night. Lily sneaked out of bed at 11 pm in her dorm. She slipped on her favourite, colourful and comfortable slippers her mother gave her for Christmas. Cautiously, she crept silently to the door so as not to wake her friends up. Lily trod softly over the creaky floorboards. Luckily, her friends slept like logs. When she reached the door, she slowly turned the polished, brilliant pure gold doorknob. As the door opened, Lily tiptoed outside. She then started half skipping, half walking to the headmistress’s study! Suddenly, Lily heard whispering and light footsteps. Lily dived behind the nearest sofa near her. Mrs Bowan (headmistress) was talking to a GHOST !!! Lily couldn’t believe her eyes. She rubbed them and pinched herself several times to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. Nope, she wasn’t dreaming. A cold chill breathed down her spine and cold sweat broke out. “Focus Lily focus, just get inside her study and copy down the exam answers,” thought Lily harshly to herself.
Before long, the ghost drifted away. Mrs Bowan opened the door then spinned around to wave goodbye and blow kisses. “This is my moment. The plan now was to grab the answers and run back to the dorm.” thought Lily. As quick as lightening, she quietly dashed to the door but unfortunately, Mrs Bowan decided to turn around. They bumped into each other and at the exact same moment it struck MIDNIGHT !!! It was so breathtaking, Lily forgot how to think for a minute. Both of their bodies collided. The pain was excruciating! Lily dragged herself to sit but needle-sharp bolts shot through her shoulders. Mrs Bowan clenched her teeth so hard her jaw ached. When Lily inhaled, another flash of pain had her seeing double as her head throbbed and her arm felt like it had been cut in two. After suffering from sssooo much pain, she yelled with all her life then collapsed on the stone floor.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Bowan gasped and kissed Lily on top of her forehead and realised how much chaos Lily caused by the yell. She swiftly disappeared through emerald green mist. After a while, teachers and a few children rushed to the sound of yell. They discovered Lily lying dead on a ruby red blanket. After sending the children home, the teachers covered the body up and sadly passed it over to her parents. Lily’s parents cried their hearts out when they found out! The only puzzling thing was, WHERE IS MRS BOWAN?????? Some people predicted that she murdered Lily and ran off. Other people predicted that Mrs Bowan was kidnapped and Lily heard the noise. She came down but was murdered by the captor. But nobody knew the truth.

ParticipantHere is the speech by Darth
“I want to stab Marie right in the chest for revenge. How dare she play a horrid trick on me like that. How dare she trick me into embarrassing myself in front of the queen!!! She even lied to the queen and made her order her guards to execute me!!!!!!! I definitely have a right to pay her back! But I need Marie near me. I will have to spoil Marie. I will give her many presents and love. I will give her all my heart to her. Then she will trust me and stay close to me. The problem is that she is so attractive and everyone is spoiling her so there is no difference. Also, I’m a ghost so I don’t want to scare her out of her wits. But, will it work? Will she accept my friendship?”

“Choog, choog,” hooted the train. Girls rushed aboard and their parents kissed them goodbye. Julia’s heart was frozen with fear as she stared at massive crowds surrounding her. “I’m sc…sc…scared,” Julia stammered. She hugged her parents and then stumbled aboard, giving her luggage to the porter. After two minutes, the train honked impatiently and then finally set off. Everyone dashed to the windows, kissing and waving goodbye frantically as if an electric shock shot through the girls. Before long, Julia chose a window seat to sit in. “Tara,” cried Julia who recognized her best friend. Pure happiness soared through her heart. Julia grinned ear to ear. Suddenly, Julia’s broad smile faded away. Tara was frowning and mumbled, “I don’t know you.” “Don’t you recognize me?” questioned Julia. Tara shrugged her shoulders and walked to a different carriage. Girls stared at Julia, shocked. Embarrassed, Julia blushed. She half walked, half ran to the toilet, and hid there until she arrived at Malory Towers ( her boarding school).
As the girls filed out, Julia wobbled up the steps because of all of the heavyweight in her trunk. Miss Potts glimpsed Julia suffering so she decided to beckon Darrell over. “Darrell my dear, do you mind if you help that first former Julia,” asked Miss Potts. “Of course, Miss Potts,” replied kindhearted Darrell. Darrell approached Julia meanwhile girls (in Julia’s carriage) started to make rumors about the Julia and Tara incident. Ignoring the whispering, Darrell offered the first former to carry her luggage to her room. After eating a scrumptious dinner, Julia dozed off in her comfy bed. DDDIIINNNGGG sounded the gong. Enthusiastically, Julia jumped out of bed to start a fresh day. Soon, day after day turned month after month. Before Julia knew it, she was sitting on the train going home because it was half term. As time ticked on, Julia was tickled by her father while her mum was talking to someone.
“Tara, do you remember Julia from nursery?” asked Tara’s mum. “Is it actually you Julia?” questioned Tara confused. With a tiny nod, Tara lurched her whole body into Julia’s arms. “Careful Tara!” scolded Tara’s mum. “So sorry for being so rude and making everyone against you,” whispered Tara. “Don’t worry,” reassured Julia, “we all make mistakes.” All of a sudden, a second former (Alice) dropped her trunk onto the tracks. Shattered pieces sprayed everywhere!!! For a minute, there was dead silence. Then sobbing echoed around the room. As quick as lightning, workers sent a ladder down and passed to the parents the untouched possessions. The rest of the crowd had to evacuate for their health and safety. Soon, everyone had gone home and the peace ruled in the station.

Leo couldn’t stop fidgeting with his short stubby pencil which had bite marks on the top. His form teacher, Mrs Tang announced, “I am going to Reception to help Miss Krenzer. If you finish this assessment early then you can grab a book.” The entire classroom was so quiet that you could only hear the sound of pencils scribbling on paper. Before long, Leo was stuck on the challenge question. “What am I going to do???” thought Leo desperately. Without hesitation, he signaled” to the smartest kid in the class, Majestic Mark.
Mark was sitting in the front row so a few heads (including Mark’s) turned and stared at Leo. Embarrassed, Leo blushed. “I need help with the challenge question,” whispered Leo. At first, Mark refused to tell the answer but some boys nagged him, too. “Hey Majestic Mark, remember you are our class rep so you need to help us,” interrupted Jack. Helplessly, Mark passed his answer to the rest of the class.
The next day, Mrs. Tang presented the results. “Unfortunately, NOBODY passed yesterday’s assessment. Not only that……….,” Mrs. Tang paused as her eyebrows furrowed, “ you all got the same answer!”

Swimming Gala
My hands went clammy and I had butterflies in my stomach as I changed into my swimsuit. I was extremely nervous today because it was my first swimming gala. I was eight years old and I was as tall as a giraffe. “Erika, you look so pale, are you ok?” a voice below me mumbled. The voice interrupted my thoughts and I looked down. Sitting on the floor with her towel was my friend Caroline. Quietly, I replied yes.
Finally, my moment had arrived. “Do as you practiced. Enjoy the game!” whispered Coach Bram. Suddenly, Mrs. Maugire boomed into her microphone, “MEDLEY RELAY 2, YEAR 4.” We stepped up on the blocks. I took a deep breath. After a moment of silence, Mr Casey shouted “ TAKE YOUR MARKES….” then the whistle pierced the air. Swiftly, I dived into the crystal, deep and sapphire-blue water. I swam butterfly as fast as I could. The crowd chanted my name. Fortunately, I was first!
From this experience, I learned to be optimistic and always challenge myself by facing my fears. It is also important to have a great team and celebrate the success and triumph together.

ParticipantAMELIA MARY EARHART
The sky was my teacher, the plane was my friend.
I was born on 24th July, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas, U.S.A. I came from a wealthy family and enjoyed a comfortable childhood. Unlike other parents, my parents encouraged me to play any rough boy sports I liked, such as baseball, football and many more. I became known around the neighbourhood as the “daring girl” who was not afraid of anything.
During World War I, I left college to work at a Canadian military hospital, where I met aviators and became intrigued with flying.
I took flying lessons and at age 25, I earned my pilot’s license. Excitedly, in 1922, I bought my own plane, a Kinner Canary, and that October, I set a women’s altitude record by flying at 14,000 feet. By 1926, I was known as the most daring female pilot in America. On May 20-21, 1932, I flew across the Atlantic. I was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. I was the 2nd person to do it- the first was Charles Lindbergh-I had also flown the longest non-stop distance for a woman ever.
Flying is my passion and I am looking forward to breaking more new records.

ParticipantI Hate Mustard
I hate mustard, I hate mustard,
sometimes it’s spicy, sometimes it’s thick,
I don’t care what it’s like, it always makes me SICK!
I hate mustard, I hate mustard,
Don’t want it in my sandwich,
Don’t want it in my pasta,
Don’t want it in my fish,
Don’t want it on my plate!
I hate mustard, I hate mustard,
It drips on the table, it drips onto the floor,
It’s runny on your fingers, then it runs to the door!

ParticipantHi Beth,
I picked “Babysitter” by Michael Rosen because it was really funny when he locked himself in his brother’s room by mistake just to annoy his older brother. The poem was about, Michael breaking a promise not to stay in bed, go to his brother’s room and tried to make his brother notice him. Then, he riddle diddles the key lock and accidentally locked the door. Michael couldn’t unlock the door because it was stuck!!! His parents found out and were furious! My favourite line in the poem was “riddle diddle riddle diddle” because it was fun listening to the suspense. I also learnt not to disturb your siblings because you might end up in a TERRIBLE situation!!
