Hi Beth,
I don’t why I couldn’t see the attachment in my previous message. I paste Ching Mae’s answers below:
1. Eleanor
2. One reason is so the children can cool their tempers, the other is so that the mother can keep calling the dad.
3. It is like an addiction because she cannot stop calling the dad , it is unhealthy for her as it damages her mental health by making her angry and stressed until blown by disappointment. She also is ashamed of it only doing it when the kids are asleep and hiding it from them.
4. Charlotte finds Scotland a boring and uneventful place she find the food bland and sees the world in a monotonous way.
Eleanor hates the wind and ‘sneers’ seeming to mock or scorn I she sees Scotland in a pessimistic way
5. weather Hiking, fishing and golf. This tells us he is very active and likes nature and the outside dad but only does mild sports that don’t include running.
6. She is an in honest mother that tells lies, she says that ‘we love it here’ even though she was just saying on the phone how much she hates it, she is trying to protect her children’s feelings by not raging in front of them so she is also caring.
She is also defensive of her actions, she says that ‘your father is Scottish’ which means she is starting to try defend her lies and justifying them by covering it up in excuses after telling them she likes Scotland.
7.the ‘horizontal way’ gives a rather topsy turvy feel to Scotland by this we can understand that the family feel rather homesick while there and that they do not fit in.
The ‘waves came …ignoring the girls’ this reflects how angry at each other they are, ignoring each other as well fine with annoying or hurting each other.
8. just before Charlotte was saying how their father would not allow them anywhere near the nest so not to damage the eggs or provoke the mother so he would be upset if they were to purposely break them.
89 I think she may be doing this in retaliation against her father her father would not let them ‘within 200 yards of them’, Eleanor may now be damaging them as form of revenge to her father leaving them in gloomy Scotland.
This may be also a way to anger charlotte as she seems to miss thir father and currently Eleanor had been ‘spitting out resentment and unkindness’ she is doing this as and extreme unkindness and showing disrespect to the people charlotte loves.
