      <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>Question: </span>Using the excerpt you have been
given, answer the question ‘how does Huxley
create a sense of foreboding and danger?’
Remember to use quotations and close literary
analysis of the language, thinking about word
      choice, literary techniques, and structural
features. This is due Friday 4th at 3 pm.

<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>Answer:</span> Aldous Huxley creates a sense of foreboding and danger by using short, snappy sentences such as,” Is there anything the matter? There was no answer.” ellipses are also used on page 213 and 214 to indicate this. Examples include: “Yes, but what exactly…?”~ Page 213 and “How really…”~ Page 214. Descriptive adjectives are also used here such as “It poisoned me; I was defiled. And then,” he added in a lower tone, “I ate my own wickedness.”~Page 213. This part of the chapter – and other sentences – makes “Brave New World” such a compelling read.

Homework: How does Huxley present the theme of technology in Brave New World?

Answer: Aldous Huxley presents technology in “Brave New World” is incredibly intelligent yet totally catastrophic because The World State is controlling the citizens illegally in modern laws using a drug known as “soma” it creates happiness and so consequently will make the citizens want to do more work when in reality they don’t. Another unfair yet crucial aspect of “Brave New World” is the hierarchy system. It is as equally unfair to the citizens as “soma” is. The main idea of the hierarchy is to see who is smarter (Alphas and Betas)and who is more foolish (Deltas and Epsilons). All the citizens are treated badly and poorly just because of their rank on the hierarchy e.g. Citizens with higher ranks have to do more work and barely even get paid. Citizens with lower ranks are often regarded as foolish or morons. So you are either a person with a higher rank or a person with a lower rank, in conclusion, everyone in the book is treated badly. Finally, the way that The World State can even find out who is what rank is also a matter of technology.

<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>Homework:</span> What is so bad about the World State portrayed
      in Brave New World?

<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>Answer: </span>Even though there is a hierarchy in which everybody is in, the whole place is in a complete mess. People are judging other people they are glad not to be them: e.g. I’m glad I’m not an alpha, they have to work so hard. Also the idea of a hierarchy is quite unfair because alphas and betas have to work very hard and they could be judged and bullied by the gammas and the deltas and epsilons are often regarded as “idiotic” just because they are a lower rank. Because of this hierarchy, people are constantly being bullied and have no freedom: they can only work (even the epsilons). Also “soma” is making the citizens do extra work when they make the choice not to. If things keep going up like this, the population will eventually reach the “Malthusian Limit” and the nation will be on the edge of disaster.

      Auto-Biography

      Prologue – An introduction

This Auto-Biography is an account of my life so far. These memories here are memories of my primary school years (2013-2020). The memories include madcaps and mishaps and many more types. I have had many memories in my primary school years; those which were amusing and memorable, and those which were the opposite, melancholy. I was at two schools in my primary school years and that is the reason why this Auto-Biography is, indeed, split into two parts. May it lay peacefully on a shelf and no one move it. (October 2020)

      Primary School Years (2013-2020)

      PART ONE: (2013-2016)

I have a reasonable amount of memories in my first school, St Winifred’s Roman Catholic Primary School (Founded 1936(It was a relatively medium school with exactly 416 students there), though some are vaguer than others. The first memory happened a little over 2 years in 2015, when I was still in Year 1. I had already made some friends by then but this memory itself was extremely bizarre: the bell went for the end of playtime in a cold day in November, one of my fellow classmates (called Elliot) was wearing a scarf and then, absent-mindedly, threw it on a brick wall – which was part of the Year 1 classroom – but then, somehow, the scarf managed to suspend up there in mid-air! Even to this day, I still wondered how it happened.

      Primary School Years (2017-2020)

      PART TWO: (2017-2020)

After 2016, I switched schools to Didsbury C of E after Winifred’s started going downhill. I had much larger memories here than before. The first of these was in 2017 when a new boy was coming to the school, his name was Timeo and quickly became one of my best friends.

1875- a wonderful and terrible year                                                                                   1798- Prologue

The MP shook his head “No, no, no” he replied ignoring the woman’s worried looks, “Chimney Sweeping, Ocrum and other jobs will have to be continued.” “It looks like that poor children aged 9-15 will just have to carry on these jobs.” “It is the only way to stop them from rampaging onto the streets and to stop their mischief.” “But…But…” the woman answered. “No buts about it, things will just have to stay the same.” “It has been like this for centuries, since the 1450s, now end of talk ladies and gentlemen, I must be gone!”

      1875

It was a wonderful and terrible year; it was wonderful because it was the year that chimney sweeping was abolished. It was a terrible year because not all the cruel jobs were abolished and gone and because more and more crimes were happening.

Douglas (14) and Ronald (14) were ambling aimlessly in the moonlit alleyway in search for places to rob. There were good hearted boys on the outside but inside they were villains and were waiting for their next robbery. Suddenly, a shadow moved in the darkness. “It’s the baked bean!” whispered Douglas. They ducked out of sight. It was indeed the queen – 55 years old and a widow. “I hereby declare that Chimney Sweeping – a cruel and disgusting job – should (for over 420 years) today indeed be abolished forever in this nation.” The Queen finished her speech and drew herself up higher, for she was a short person, the crowd erupted into cheers and Queen Victoria bowed at them all and sat back down.

“That was a nice rabbit and pork” inquired Ronald. “Yer should’ve seen your own boat race!” laughed Douglas. “Let’s stop at the ole café and have a roise lee. “Thank goodness!” Said Ronald and the two of them walked the rest of the way.

It is the year 2634 and creepy and ominous things are happening in the new hotel that Robin owns…………

At the chime of midnight, Robin awoke. He looked around in his immense room as if he was looking for something. No. That was a relief. Recently, in his hotel vast numbers of people started to leave the hotel, when Robin asked why the people would just simply shake their heads, quivering in fear. This wasn’t the only paranormal thing that had happened during the course of the last few weeks, some people had even gone missing! The customers had declined in number, going back home or going to other hotels, until the only person left in the hotel was Robin. This was a complete disaster! Tonight was the night he was going to get to the bottom of this.

Robin opened the door from his room – CREEEEEEK! The hinges went. He crept slowly but steadily into the deep, dark, dangerous corridor. As Robin groped forwards in the darkness he glanced at the paintings on the walls. They stood still, but Robin had a nasty feeling that the eyes of the people in the paintings were following HIM. He shuddered at the thought of it, but he wouldn’t let a silly old painting stop him from finding out what was happening. Robin plodded on. He was almost at the end of the corridor when suddenly, he could just perceive, in the utter darkness, a ghostly black shadow. Robin froze in terror. He hid in a corner and looked away.

He braced himself and watched as the shadow grabbed him and he remembered no more………………………………………………………………

CROWD: (Silence) (Looking up at Ronald in horror)

      RONALD: (Awkwardly) Oh…errrrrr

      MAN: What…Was…That…?

      The Battle

      Prologue

It is the year A.D. 43 and the Britons are managing to evade invasion from the Romans. This will not happen forever though. The Romans will (eventually) invade Britain and the Britons will eventually decline in number until there won’t be any of them, ever again………

      The Battle

UP JUMPED RICHARD, and he scratched his head wondering what day it was; of course! It would be the day he had been waiting for, the battle. Should they win against Boudicca and the Britons, they would be victorious and claim Britain for themselves! However if they did lose it would be their last chance and would be forced into exile. Richard shivered at the thought of it, nevertheless he and the troops would have to try.

The Romans were running out of weapons because they were fighting so many battles that the Emperor Claudius gave some of the troops a job – to infiltrate the Britons’ camps and take all the weapons they needed. The Emperor had one rule – you must not be caught or seen. Richard was only 15 that year, he was nimble and agile – nobody could catch him!

Richard ambled aimlessly but managed to navigate the way to the Britons’ camps. He poked his head through a hole in the roof. “How strange, who lives like this?!” he thought: there was a small room, he guessed was the cooking room*1, it contained a table, a small campfire and four rocks, three of them looked rather pointy and sharp, and one looked rather blunt*2, he did not understand what they were used for. Then there was the cooling room*3, which seemed to have some kind of decorated skull with nut shells covering the eye holes. Finally, after a quick scan in the storage room, Richard pulled out a gargantuan shield, a trident and a powerful-looking 25 arrows and a bow. Richard went back into battle, armed to the teeth………

*1: It is named the cooking room because the term ‘Kitchen’ was not used back then. *2: Sharp stone, sharp stone, sharp stone and blunt stone. *3: Living room.

      The Aftermath of the battle

Boudicca had been slain and most of her troops had crumpled so the Romans won. Claudius was victorious, however not all the land had been invaded just yet.  This was just the beginning of the Roman Conquest!

      44 Years Later

It was bright and sunny in that year, A.D. 87, the rays of light shone majestically down onto the leafy green grass. There was a huge announcement that the conquest was over and that the Romans had won. The 58 year-old Richard looked down at his son, the 21-year old Athelstan, he had fought at the previous battle. He slowly sat down and told is son about his days as a warrior.

      Epilogue

The Romans would stay in Britain for another 323 years until 410 when they would go back to Italy. The Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons would take over until 1066.

      The Witches’ Potion(Macbeth)

      Double double toil and trouble,

      Fire burn and cauldron bubble

Stir thee a claw of raven,

Add head of bear, clean and shaven,

Bubble thou heart of snorting pig,

Spice the smell of twain myrtle twigs.

      Fire crackle cauldron simmer,

      Silver potion shine and shimmer.

      Thereinto add a scorpion’s sting,

Mixed in nigh with all a black crow’s wing,

Now lift the cauldron, hear it sing,

Like a threadbare string among a ring.

      Fire crackle cauldron simmer,

      Silver potion shine and shimmer.

Forthwith anon add scaly skin of snake,

Now add flake of snails’ shell to the bake,

Swiftly mix trice beaks of fowls to the cake,

Frothing and bubbling for all our sakes.

      Silver potion shine and shimmer.

      Nightfall On The City

The City of New Orleans glistened in the rippling white, primeval moonlight; the skyscrapers towered above the never-ending skyline and the gleaming stars were scattered across the navy, blue sky. You could say that this is one of the liveliest and beautiful cites upon nightfall; ravenous people ate at the restaurants with their MEAL DEAL banners up the side of them and people consistently came home on their cars.  But if you ignore most of this and move to the road in which connects to the famous city (Snake road), you would find that it is completely deserted after 3 o clock. The reason partly was because everyone that moved into the city would never ever move out again. The other reason was, however many people thought that it was haunted and never walked on it neither drove on it.

Robert Nick was sitting in the car listening to the boring radio giving a speech on how to make the most out of tinned food. He and his family had been driving for 3 days now and it was scorching, blazing and flaming in the car. Not that they had actually been driving for 3 days non-stop. They had stopped at 2 MOTELS during the course of the proceeding days. Now that they were near their destination, Rob was getting excited. The car was freezing-hot now and it was also getting dark. “You have arrived at your destination” said the GPS. They were almost there, BANG! CRASH! “Oh No!” screamed Rob, as they jumped out of the rusty archaic vehicle as it fell off the cliff. On Snake road, there was a 70% chance that your vehicle would perish and a 20% chance that you would die with it. Rob was lucky, is family was lucky (for now).

They walked the last part of the journey and arrived at a luxurious 5 star hotel. It was exquisite and radiant; golden and sapphire chandeliers hung in every room. The hotel resembled in the exact shape of New Orleans the more Rob aimlessly ambled around. He was lost for words when the family reached the restaurant. Every table was decorated with miniscule glass statues and the tables themselves had expensive, velvet cloth. As he sat down to at dinner, he felt that he was on another world.

It was now 11:55PM and Rob ambled upstairs for the New years’ eve countdown. He glanced at his watch, 11:59. Everyone began the countdown: “10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…Rob’s heart began to beat faster than usual…2…Even faster…1…A tense moment…IT’S A NEW YEAR! 1999 had passed, 2000 had begun HAPPY NEW YEAR, HAPPY NEW CENTURY AND A HAPPY NEW MILLEMIUM Rob couldn’t have been happier…………….

Convenience food is an essential part of everyday life nowadays however until c.1975 convenience food became widespread and had a surge in popularity. 100 years ago, people only bought the things they needed and made the food themselves. The colossal worry is…nowadays is that proper cooking is becoming more and more scarce and ready foods are becoming more and more abundant and popular. This article will help you understand the good and bad side of Convenience Food.

Why we should use and buy Convenience Food?

Although Ready foods can be harmful, there is a good side to it and the answer is right in the word! They are ready! If you are just an apprentice cooker and you do not know how to make the foods that you like to eat, you can just buy it, warm it up and eat it.  Grab, Go meals are highly cost efficient especially in concentrated form for production and widespread distribution. You can easily clean it up and can hardly have any leftovers. One last point that I would like to make is that the spoilage and waste occur is harshly reduced. “As illustrated by the success of fast food, being more convenient than the alternative will almost always give you a significant advantage in the marketplace” It’s obvious that there is no quicker or better way to satisfy your rumbling stomach. But then again, what exactly is the price to pay once you’ve had your fill, and now you have new illnesses from eating at fast food restaurants? “In the United States, food-borne diseases have been estimated to cause 6 million to 81 million illnesses and up to 9,000 deaths each year”. Anyone one of these numbers can be from someone’s family. Most of these bacteria are found in the food you eat from your local fast food joint. Eating at one of these places can cost thousands of dollars in hospital bills, all because of a diseased burger.

      Why we should cook instead?

Because food prepared at home is healthier. We eat fewer calories when we cook at home. And when restaurant dishes and home cooked meals are compared on a per-calorie basis, home cooked meals are healthier. In 2015 alone, over 7,000 people died in Australia from obesity related issues so the government attempted to ban Junk food because it is an illogical solution but instead they reduced their sales and educated people about its negative side-effects it has. This is not just happening in Australasia though. In the U.S.A, Convenience Food is very common, over 20% of children and over 40% of adults are overweight or extremely overweight from obesity from the Grab, Go meals. This was just one reason why we should cook our food instead. Another reason is that cooking is a life skill and what if something happens to the government and you would have to make your own meals instead? Fast Food can also be very addictive. This still remains a problem because the decline of home cooking will mean that for example: An adult loves Fast Food so that he tells his children to eat it and then that child would tell HIS children and it will go on and on and on. A recent survey was to see how many people liked cooking, who did not and who were ambitious about it. The following statistics were the results: 15% of people said that they loved to cook, 50% said that they hated to cook and 35% of people said that they were ambitious about cooking.

      Conclusion

Everyone should think twice before deciding to eat fast food. The health risks aren’t worth your life, and animals that live in slaughter houses aren’t treated properly or hygienically before their death, which can cause many food-borne illnesses to inhabit food. Although it is easy to buy and cheap, risking a life for something that isn’t good for any person in the first place could cost thousands of dollars in hospital bills. It is important to eat healthy and make good choices when deciding what to put in your body. Don’t be lazy and pick up fast food on your way home from work. Make the right choice and eat some vegetables.

      The Break In

It was the morning of the 6th of August and the three brothers were moving to their new house in the woods. They did not know what lay in wait for the next few days as a disaster was due to happen soon. The first brother said, “This house is rather sinister”. ”Don’t be silly, this house cost us a fortune”, so they ambled in and started to unpack.

30 miles away, in the deep depths of the forest a woman was killed by her husband ……… or at least she thought it was her husband. It was a stranger. He picked up the axe that the woman was trying to protect herself with and headed in the direction that was his old house ……… the one that HE was trying to claim for himself. So he went.

Meanwhile, in the slightly sinister house the brothers had finished unpacking and sat down to eat their dinner – pizza! However, after the third brother took a bite, he fell to the floor – clutching his stomach and writhing in agony. Had the dinner been poisoned – they did not know. He died immediately. The remaining two brothers were too shocked to even speak; they decided that a good night’s sleep would do them good.

The clock had just struck Midnight and through the house was all quiet. They did not know that in a minute’s time that the silence would be deafened by the sky scorching light and the screams. Silence. CRASH! BANG! BOOM! They are coming. One of the man’s helpers landed in the room that the second brother was sleeping in. A fright in the night would be how to describe this scenario except that it was much more frightening. “ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!”He screamed so that the other brother could hear. The other, older brother burst into the room and saw the source of the commotion. Pulling out a cricket bat – the strongest weapon he had – he slashed the bat onto the alien figure (who later turned out to be a murderer). The person staggered backwards and fell through the window. SMASH! The brothers did not speak a word to each other about what they had just seen. Night passed.

In the morning, the brothers awoke to find themselves dangling off the side of their new (and old) house. “How can things get any worse?” sighed the second brother, “We have been through enough trouble these last few days.” “I don’t know” said the first. Just as the first brother had finished saying that, they were confronted with the most terrifying thing (or object) that they (or the youngest brother (the one who died)) had ever seen. It had a completely white head and an utterly normal black suit and had protruding black tentacles emanating from the body. It had inclined to have no feet or legs – it just hovered in mid-air. The brothers’ sense of horror never left them…………………………

      WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT????……….

“It is important that childeren read books like Once.”

      • If you don’t remember those who where killed in Poland in the Holocaust then there would have been loads of people dead for no reason.
      • This was a real event in history and even though it has been 75 years since the end of WWII we still have to remember the gargantuan, massive damage that happened in not only Britan , but also other countries that were hevily affected by the Holocaust .

“Childeren shouldn’t read these Genres of books.”

      • It could really scare children if you tell them that it was a real event in history and would probably , hevily influence the way that , these childeren read and would almost definitely choose another type of book next time .
