ParticipantSummary for Lesson 1
In today’s class we began our work on action stories, thinking today about what an action story is and how the class can use its conventions in their writing. We began by discussing what action stories include and what stories the class had read before studying different story elements and thinking about how they are shaped by genre. We looked at four tips for action story writing before the class invented their own spy characters, delving into how to make them compelling protagonists. They came up with some amazing gadgets they invented for their spies to use and finally wrote some short spy reports from their character’s perspective. Such amazing work today everyone, really well done for all your wonderful contributions. It was so great to meet you and I can’t wait to read your exhilarating action stories. See you next week 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 2
In today’s lesson we completed our work on action stories, today looking at the four different types of action stories and digging into key elements such as conflict and fight scenes. We began with a look at an Anthony Horowitz spy story masterclass before thinking about lots of different types of action stories you could have. We then learned about the different types of action stories (person vs. person/ nature/ the powerful/ time) and the class planned some amazing stories based on this. Finally we discussed comics and why they fit the action genre so well and the class shared some incredible thoughts on Dog Man and on the way comics work in general. Wonderful work everyone, I can’t wait to read your comments! Remember to use the link below to help and see you next week 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 3
In today’s class we did our first lesson on historical writing, thinking today about the Stone Age. We started by discussing our favourite parts of history before discussing the Stone Age and thinking about how to turn history into creative stories. The class watched some Horrible Histories and we then wrote some descriptive passages imagining the life of a caveman. The class then thought about how Stone Age people might speak before finally doing some character work. Such incredible work today class, you were all brilliantly passionate today and it was so much fun to work with you all on historical creative writing. Keep up the amazing ideas and see you next week 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 4
In today’s class we continued our work on historical writing, thinking today about modern history. We started by discussing WW2 and what the students knew about it before learning about the end of the war and the VE Day celebrations. We watched an interview with a man who was there at the time, discussed the bittersweet emotions people may have felt and the class wrote some amazing paragraphs imagining they were there. We then chose some historical events that the class would have wanted to be there for and thought about how to transform these into stories with some captivating characters to match. Incredible work today everyone, your historical knowledge is fab and you’ve combined it with your creativity beautifully. I can’t wait to read your stories! See you next week 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 5
In today’s class we finished our Christmas course with a lesson on Christmas story writing, thinking about how to write about the holiday period in lots of different genres. We began by discussing what Christmas stories the class knew before watching a summary of A Christmas Carol and watching a section of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. We spoke about what these stories had in common and what ingredients a Christmas story should have and the class used this to write some fantastic descriptive passages. We spoke about genre, the moral of the story and wrote a story together as a class before finishing with a Christmas-themed Stop the Bus. Incredible work today everyone, it was such a joy to see you all and to work with you over the past five weeks; you’ve been such excellent students and writers! Keep up the lovely work, see you all soon in our new January course 🙂
