Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s lesson we focused on the concept of writer’s voice, thinking about how to create a definitive and unique authorial voice using ideas of tone, inspiration and experimentation to help broaden the class’s understanding of their own personal way of writing. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help write the pieces assigned for homework. It also contains our work on the six tips for exploring your own writer’s voice, thoughts on taking inspiration from other authors, our work on tone and the article we studied in class as an example of using different kinds of tone in writing. Finally, it also has the prompts for the students’ free-writing, thinking about which genres they tend to gravitate towards and how they can break those barriers down and experiment with genres they feel less comfortable with in order to expand and develop their penmanship, voice and style. Everyone worked incredibly today, really well done guys! I thought your analysis of your inspirations, favourite genres and your ‘perfect reader’ was fantastic. Keep up the sparky work and I will see you all next week! 😊
Here is the video we watched about author’s voice in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt7XCO0f4EI
Here is another video you can watch if you have the time with tips to help you develop your voice from another professional author: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z-zd72dgRQ&t=1s
Here is the music I was playing for the free-writing exercise. You can use this to help with your homework: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCtixpIWBto
Homework- due Saturday at 3pm, not Tuesday! & yes you can edit it a little afterwards if you’d like 🙂

I’m not sure if we are are asked to keep it to a story, or any type of writing that I’m not comfortable with. The most unfamiliar one is a letter so I wrote a letter.

Hi Beth this is my homework for this week!
Larry always believed that he was the perfect. Good looking, strong smart, bald, shiny and most importantly, smooth skin. He was always in a good mood (apart from when he ran into Pat the Potatoe who apparently like picking fights with people). Larry (in his not so very humble opinion) though he could win a nobel prize competition for the best potatoe in his potatoe salad. Wonderfull. Luck was also on his side, the cold air really manadged to shape his facial hair into anything he wanted. He though to himself; he would be up there among all great potatoes. He would autition for it, if it werent for that, he was stuck and crammed in a tiny transparent room jam-packed with other not so good looking potatoes. He stared out at his desteny when all of a sudden a hand reached out… His future was fried.

Summary for Lesson 2
In our lesson together, we focused on descriptive writing, thinking about the three fundamental building blocks: high-level vocab, literary techniques and sensory language. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help write the descriptive pieces assigned for homework. It also contains some really important and helpful links such as the online thesaurus and vocab lists, the inspiration for the work the class did on up-levelling their vocab to an even more vivid and sophisticated level, and finally our discussions on sensory language, creating atmosphere, avoiding cliche and using unique and original literary techniques to grab the reader’s attention. Amazing and creative work today everyone- well done for all your beautifully written descriptions. Keep up the great job, well done 🙂

Summary for Lesson 3
In our lesson together, we focused on narrative writing, thinking about the different stages of writing a narrative story that we could use to create compelling and capitvating stories. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help write the narrative stories assigned for homework. It also contains the step-by-step process of story-planning, focusing on the seven elements of narrative writing such as plot, point of view, symbolism and theme. We completed work on how to hook the reader- for which the students came up with some great ideas regarding the technique in media res– and on the importance and definition of story pacing. I was really impressed by everyone’s work today, you all came up with some brilliant writing and really adept use of elements and techniques. Keep up the wonderful work and I can’t wait to read your pieces! 🙂

Summary for Lesson 4
In today’s class we continued our writing lessons thinking today about emotive writing. We began by writing short descriptions trying to evoke particular emotions from the reader before thinking about analysing the connotations of words to uncover what kinds of emotions they communicate. We then looked at Pepys’ diary describing the Great Fire of London and then discussed what historical events we could write a characters’ diary entry for. The class created some amazing historical characters and finally touched on what they needed to remember while diary writing. Fantastic work everyone, particularly when thinking about changing the emotional crux of a piece and seeing what that did to the tone etc. Really well done and see you next week 🙂

Hi Beth, this is my homework for this week:
October 14, 1666
Dear diary,
Today, I was privileged to witness the Battle of Hastings, an event that shall rewrite history as a monumental victory for Duke William of Normandy (my 5th cousin) and the French cause. From the moment the first arrows flew, it was clear that my dear cousins tactical brilliance was on display. The Normans, under William’s command, demonstrated extraordinary discipline and strategic acumen.
The Saxon forces (those whom we were fighting) was led by a man named Harold Godwinson. Harold Godwinson has rather short matty hair that fell on the top of his shoulders. As the battle grew feircer and feircer just like a ravenour fire swallowig all which got in its way, a strong musty smell came over out men, yet still we persevered. We executed our plan with remarkable precision. Our soilders fought relentlessly, forcing the harried Saxons to weakened their formation. The turning point came when William orchestrated a brilliant retreat, a move that drew Harold’s men out of their stronghold.
What i saw was a sight to behold, men fell everywhere i looked. Horses screamed, my eyes grew wide. A bitter sandstorm which erupted from the fight flew into my mouth. I heard scream after scream which plunged me into a deep see emotions but our men still pushed through. Yet amist all the chaos, I managed to pick out Harold Godwinson falling amongst the fray, a testament to the ferocity of the conflict.
As I watched William’s banner rise above the battlefield, it was evident that today’s victory would have far-reaching consequences. This battle not only secured our Duke’s claim but also marked the beginning of a new chapter in our history. It was an unforgetable moment. I, Louis Thornton, feel honoured to be able to witness the conquering of Great Britan.
Yours sincerly,
Louis Thornton-

Summary for Lesson 5
In today’s class we looked at literary techniques, thinking about learning some advanced techniques to use in our writing. We began by brainstorming different examples before looking at their impact and the effect they can create. We then considered lots of interesting examples, utilising this to create expressive pieces of description. The class then learned about Chekhov’s gun and discussed this in relation to foreshadowing. Finally they wrote some amazing pieces of foreshadowing, using a variety of different foreshadowing techniques to do so. Incredible work everyone, you all engaged with these advanced techniques amazingly and were very passionate today; keep it up and see you next week 🙂
