Summary for Lesson 1:
What did we cover
– Discussed how the book group will work
– Introduced ourselves to each other
– Discussed our initial thoughts on The Twits
– Did a character study (using illustrations of the characters)
– Worked through the questions for the first half of The TwitsClass report
It was wonderful to meet the new students today; they all were brilliantly enthusiastic and
lively, which made for such a welcoming and warm environment, and a great start to our
sessions together.
Firstly, we discussed how the sessions will work (i.e. 2 lessons a week, 2 homeworks a week,
a different book every week, preparing VIPERS answers before the lessons).
We then went round to introduce ourselves; it was lovely to hear what the students favourite
books were and see them being so warm to one another.
After discussing our initial thoughts on The Twits, we did a character study using illustrations
of the characters; we discussed what we could tell about them for the way they were
presented. I was impressed by how attentive the students were; they noticed how details such
as the characters’ expressions or the colours they wore tell the reader so much about what
type of people they are.
Next, we moved onto going through the VIPERS questions. I was delighted to see the
students get stuck in with confidence, as it can be very daunting to share your ideas with
people you have only just met. The answers they gave were intelligent and well supported.
When we spent longer discussing some questions (such as ‘are Mr. and Mrs/ Twit a good
match) it was great to hear the personal opinions of different students and see how well they
could present their arguments.
Overall, this was a hugely encouraging first session, and I am very excited to continue our
work together and see how the students continue to grow in confidence and ability.
With every new session, the work we do will become slightly more challenging; this will be a
wonderful opportunity for the students to push themselves and discover a real joy in reading
and discussing these marvellous books!Homework for Lesson1:

Wonderful work, Zelin!
You have included many fantastic details about what happens and given a very clear overview of who the Twits are and what they do. The adjectives you use in your summary are particularly helpful, as they give the reader a more vivid understanding of the book.
To improve, make sure you pay close attention to what the question is asking (i.e. this question was asking for a summary of the first half only).

Firstly, the Book tells us there are two persons (Mr. Twit and Mrs. Twit).
And then, Mr. Twit and Mrs. Twit try to make each other angry.
And then, the Book started talking about Mr. Twit’s home and on every Wednesday Mr. Twit eats bird pie.
Lastly, one-time Mr. Twit went to collect bird’s but there was no bird there was only four children then Mr. Twit said ok, children pie.
