Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s lesson we started our first book Journey to Jo’Burg learning about the history of South African apartheid and thinking about the history behind the book. The students shared their thoughts and ideas beautifully, reflecting on how they felt about the story before we dig into the history of South Africa, thinking about all the complex dynamics of the country in terms of culture, history and language. We learned about apartheid and important figures such as Nelson Mandela and finally asked some questions about South Africa in general. Amazing work everyone, you were all so sparky and creative today. Well done 🙂

Hi Beth,
I didn’t do a lot but it is very accurate.
Have a nice week! Thank you for the amazing lesson.
I think that Beverley Naidoo was a brilliant author. I also find it very interesting how she didn’t like her handwriting. I wonder if all authors write their stories on the computer or they write it in their notebook or book first. I also want to know if Beverley Naidoo comes from South Africa.
FACTS
She is white although she comes from south Africa. And was born there.
She married another South African exile and returned freely to South Africa for the first time in 1991.
She now lives in the UK
Beverley Naidoo was born into a white, middle class family in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1943.
Her involvement with the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa led to her being imprisoned in solitary confinement for eight weeks at the age of 21.
Nadine Naidoo plays her as an actress.
Nadine is 13 years old in the story.(Did you know that Nadine in the story is based on the actress that played Beverly? (I didn’t))
Thanks again

Summary for Lesson 2
In today’s class we continued work on Journey to Jo’burg, thinking about how to understand the characters and themes. We discussed the homework and watched and interview with the author, before moving on to unpicking the symbolism of the identity documents in the story. We learned the history of these and completed some language analysis, responding to comprehension questions on Chapter 8 of the novel. The class did this beautifully, reflecting deeply on the injustice of police violence in the story and came up with some amazing ideas to share. Very impressive guys- well done and see you next week 🙂

Hi Beth, thank you for the lesson, have a great week!☺️
Dear Diary,
Today has been a horrible day! Let me tell you all about it. I was cooking food for me and the Madam. The usuals, green beans, grains of rice, and a slice of bread. I served supper on the table and called Madam to come and eat. She came immediately. “What is this?” she groaned. “Has your father ever taught you how to cook?” I didn’t answer but instead shook my head. She looked at me in a disgusted way and looked at me up and down. After muttering a few rude words under her breath, she finally sat down. I tucked into my rice and beans when suddenly, there was a knock on the door. “Who is disturbing us, open the door instantly!” Madam shouted.
Groaning, I walked to the door and opened it. To my surprise, were my two children, Naledi and Tiro! Before I could say anything, they took me into a giant hug! With tears rolling down my cheeks, I hugged them back. “WHO IS THIS?” boomed a voice behind me. “Oh, Madam, these are my two children, Naledi and Tiro,” I explained, trying to stay calm. Naledi explained that my baby was sick! I knew I needed to do something about it. After all, I was the mother. I asked my Madam if I could go see her and she said that I could go tomorrow.
I hope that this all goes to plan and my baby will be ok in the next few days.

Dear diary,
Yesterday, my children came all the way to where I work to tell me how my dear daughter was sick. But, when I asked madam if I could have a days rest they declined almost immediately! She said I had to take care of the children next month because she was going on a business trip. I’m so worried about Dineo, but all I can do now is to hope that she can get better soon. After one month I’ll be going back to check on her and perhaps take her to the hospital for a checkup. I really hope that she survives, if she doesn’t I shall still hope her the best.
It is really the worst day ever! I just can’t stop that strange feeling in my stomach as I closed the door on my children and went back to work. I guess I’ll just have to accept the truth that I really was born just to serve white people.
Oh how worried I am for poor Dineo, she’s just a child but she’s already on the verge of death it really hurts to think about it. It is so worrisome, I really wish I could just be allowed to meet my family for just one day. It’ll really make me feel better. Anyways I better get some sleep since I’ll have to wake up early again for work. Bye.-

Summary for Lesson 3
In today’s class we finished Journey to Jo’burg, thinking about the journey the characters go on and how it affects them. We began by discussing the theme of journeys and our personal connection to it before thinking about the characters in the story. We spoke about Naledi and how she changes and connected this to Chapter 6 when they first met Grace. The class analysed this passage beautifully before finally watching a short animation on the story and coming up with incredible ideas for their own scenes from the story they could add to the book. Super great work today everyone, I can’t wait to see your homework! Keep up the amazing work and see you next week 🙂

2. After the party, Auntie starts coughing and Naledi gets very worried
3. Mum realises that Auntie is really ill and she decides to call the doctor.
4. The doctor takes Auntie away
5. The next week Auntie is better
6. Naledi is happily sitting down for a rest
7. She realises there is something on the couch
8. She finds a letter
9. The letter says, Dear Naledi and family, we are inviting you to Switzerland for no slavery for your life. Please arrive in 2 days. The Switzerland government
10. Naledi is really happy
11. She tells her mother
12. They are really really happy

Summary for Lesson 4
In today’s lesson we began our work on the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, thinking about the historical context of the novel and how understanding the mythology that Stoker plays off can enrich our understanding of the book. The class started by debating the things they liked and didn’t like about the book before thinking about the mythology of vampires and what they understand about vampiric legends and where they come from. We then moved on to discussing the author and what the facts of his life can illuminate about the story, which the class completed really well. Finally we spoke about the specific context of the ‘turn of the century’, just after the book was published in 1897, and how contemporary anxieties and xenophobia could have fed into the novel. We thought about the impact of modernity and how Dracula encapsulates the battle of the ‘old’ vs. the ‘new’ at a time where the world was straining between superstition and science. Everyone worked really fantastically today- the class were all super focused and came up with great ideas. Fab work today guys, keep it up and I’ll see you all next lesson 🙂

Why humans thought that vampires would take over
Firstly humans did not have many cures to diseases so if these mosteroue creators started roaming around humans would be terrified. Secondly it was the turn of the century witch meant a new everything new technology like fridges and clocks and watches but if new humans species came humans would be scared for there life.Thirdly humans like not want o look like those mosterous creatures because they would think things like ahhh I don’t want to look like that I don’t want to drink a different humans blood so humans would be terrified.Vampires also have many super crazy abilities so if a vampire came up to human they human would run but then the vampire would turn into a bay to fly but then the human finds a rock wall and then h morphes into a lizard out of nowhere.

Summary for Lesson 5
In today’s lesson we continued our study of Dracula, thinking specifically about some of the key stylistic choices that Stoker made throughout the novel. We began with a focus on genre, thinking about the genre of gothic horror and how Dracula fits those conventions, before moving on to thinking about the form of the book and its style as an epistolary novel. We spoke about perspective, completing a short creative task imagining the novel from Dracula’s perspective, which the class did wonderfully, pulling out some lovely aspects of Dracula’s narrative voice. Finally, we discussed the notion of dreams vs. reality and the ambiguity over how much of the plot could be a figment of Harker’s imagination, considering how Stoker purposefully creates a sense of disorientation for the reader. Fantastic work today class, you all came up with some gorgeous ideas particularly when it came to analysing the effect of the novel being told through people’s diaries and letters. Well done and see you next week 🙂

Hi Beth!
Here is my homework for this week! I hope you like it, have a brilliant week! 😁
By the way, I chose the second one. Do you think dracula is a real character or an evil presence?
I think that Dracula is an evil presence. I know this because in the book, it says that dracula has a pair of wings and we all know that it is not physically possible to fly. I also know that Dracula is not real because if vampires were real, the vampire population would quickly outpace the human population, which would make the human population disappear even faster. Also, vampires are meant to have fangs and if vampires were real then the fangs would show when they open their mouth but in normal human teeth, that is not possible because all our teeth are the same size. (That is not strictly true but in movies, the fangs are like 4 times bigger than the regular teeth when in real life they are about the same.)
Some people may believe that vampires are real because of their cultures and religions, but respectfully, I don’t believe that that is true. Although a tiny bit of me thinks that vampires are real because in movies, they look really real and I have had nightmares about them.

Dracula is a mysterious fake creature because the writer did this at th turn of the century on purpous (it’s my prediction). He did this because he wanted to scare people into believing this targeting the little kids and early teenagers because he wouldn’t expect 30 year old adults to believe that sort of stuff .dracula is an fictional creature because in real life have we ever seen a mysterious blood sucking animal on earth no because it’s all just a theory.
Dracula is an evil presence because there is no scientific stuff to say that blood sucking stuff is real like Dracula and even if it was true we would see vampires not everyday but like every moth you would see 2-3 vampires so that’s why Dracula and vampires are not real.

Summary for Lesson 6
In today’s lesson we completed our work on Dracula, focusing on the atmosphere Stoker creates through setting and learning about critical readings of the novel. We began with work on the settings of the book, moving on to analyse an extract from the book looking for literary techniques. The class wrote some great job adverts evoking the sense of eeriness exhibited in the book’s setting. Finally, we spoke about the complicated legacy of the book, particularly how the book treats women and the antisemitism that can be found in some of Stoker’s writing. We had a very thoughtful and sophisticated discussion about these issues which the students participated in exceptionally well. Lovely work today everyone, you have all done brilliantly today. Keep it up and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 7
In today’s class we started our next book The Falcon’s Malteser, thinking through the way the author uses parody. We shared our ideas on the novel before learning about what parody was, digging into examples the class knew about whether it was music, literature or art. We then combined this with our knowledge of detective stories and shared ideas on why Horowitz might have chosen the 1940s film The Maltese Falcon to parody. We thought about how the author makes it funny and finally pulled all our ideas on comedy, crime and the conventions of parody to reflect on how this story is written. Amazing and invigorating work everyone, very well done for all your sparky ideas. Keep up the fantastic work 🙂

Nick and Tim diamond are not your usual detectives because Tim diamond always tries to lighten the mood same as nick tim diamond is like the main detective and nick is his helper ,Tim diamond should be in a book for the worlds worst detective because he sucks at his job but it’s like a good type of I suck at my job overall I think Tim diamond are not the type of detectives you think they are because you think of a detective to be serious tim diamond and nick make it sound like a completely different story. The Falcons Masteaser is also a parody of a movie from the 1940 s they changed the title to somthing stupid to make the movie sound dumb becuase malteaser is a choclate and a falcon owning a malteaser is pretty funny.

Hi Beth ,
Here is my homework for this week.
Thank you for the magnificent lesson, have a great week!
I think that Tim is a very funny and irresponsible person because he wants to be the boss of the diamond brothers but he is actually very distracted and stupid. Nick diamond is a more clever and reasonable person and he does most of the work. He gets the job assuming that it would be a very easy job. His part in investigations are mainly luck-based, as he is always the subject of a clichéd “lucky phrasing from the stupid character makes the thinker realise something crucial” trope, or he conveniently opens secret passageways by accident.
On the other hand, Nick diamond is more of a shy, sometimes funny, serious person who helps develop the plot in the story. Being only a teenager, Nick isn not a spy detective like Tim, but is the brain behind the business and somewhat of the underdog, initially perceived by people as nothing more than just a ‘smart kid’. Nick Diamond clearly does most of the work when Tim is just messing about. He does his homework for him and fills him out most of the time.
Thanks again

In today’s class we used the story as inspiration to create some detective plots of our own. We began by recapping the ideas in the story and then thought about Tim Diamond as a character, analysing why Horowitz has written him in the way he has. We then read the opening of the story and used it as inspiration for our own detective plots, before finally the class came up with their own mysteries and adventures for the characters and created a detective character using the original as inspiration. Yes because Tim diamond and nick are both funny characters and it would be interesting to see them solve another mystery like 2 Freinds going to there office and reporting the same person but saying there where in diffrent places since Timon is saying John when missing at the park but leo is saying he was last Sean at a zoo it would be very interesting to see the author write about it and how they get closer to solving the mystery and there being sone sort of plot twist and but eventually it’s all good and they find where John is and the story is over also Tim diamond being the older brother os funny becuase he is not as smart as nick nick being young and smarter kind of overshadows Tim diamond.

I would read another story about the Diamond brothers because I really like the author and the book. The two brothers are very amusing characters and I would like to see them solve another mystery because The Falcons Malteser is a very good book. Also I love how Anthony Horowitz can make up such brilliant characters such as The Fat Man, Beatrice von Falkenberg and the professor. I have also read the book Public Enemy Number 2 and it was phenomenal. I recommend this book to everyone because although it is a bit violent, it is a great book to read and Anthony Horowitz is a perfect writer who is funny.

In today’s class we had our final lesson on The Falcon’s Malteser thinking about creative interpretations of the text. We began by discussing character and how Horowitz creates characters that jump off the page and grab us, which the class then used to create their own amazing characters that could fit into the world of the story. We did some work on the ending of the story and the class came up with their own after having considered lots of different types of endings a novel can have. They all shared some brilliant ideas today I was very impressed by the creativity on display. Excellent work everyone, see you next week 🙂

Amazing work here Mingyi- I love your use of colours, they make the poster pop off the page! The way you have included images such as a Maltesers box mixed with the guns is great and reflects the parody of the story really nicely, as has the text you have put side by side with it. I really like how you have created a sense of anticipation for the reader by referring to the twists and chaos in the story and think you have used the imagery in the poster very nicely. Super intriguing work- well done! To make this even better, could you include a quote from the story to draw the reader in and get them to think about the main themes of the film? Overall really great work well done 🙂

Brilliant work Sanya, well done! This is such a professional and slick-looking poster that uses colour, visuals and imagery really powerfully to pull the viewer in. You have used some excellent fonts that really reflect the themes of the story and play into the crime genre, whilst your quotes at the bottom entice the reader and make them want to watch the film. Lovely choice of pictures to illustrate too- the contrast between the mob boss with his hat over his eyes and the Malester packets is really amusing and works beautifully. Great choice of actors- to make this even better, could you add a short synopsis of the plot to hook the reader in and make them want to see more? You could choose a quote from the book that intrigues them in that way. Overall excellent work, well done 🙂

Vivid and powerful work Eric, well done! I love the way you have designed this poster to jump off the page, using strong, dark lines to bring out the key features and then using snappy, vibrant words such as “action and banter” to intrigue the reader. You have chosen some amazing images to reflect the themes of money, wealth and theft and have communicated the genre of the story very well; just from glancing at this poster, we get such a clear sense that it is adventurous and crime-related, with the font and colour working well to highlight this too. I enjoyed how you used the features of a movie poster i.e., cost and the date it is out! To make this even better, could you include some images of the characters in the film to give us a sense of what the movie may look like? Overall very exciting work well done 🙂

In today’s lesson we began our study of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, focusing on the historical context of the book in order to understand Austen’s point of view on the society she lived in. We began by discussing Austen’s life and how the kinds of stories she chose to write correlated to her own experiences (i.e., remaining unmarried) before moving on to conducting some research on the Regency Period. We analysed the social conventions of the 1800s, particularly in reference to the pressure on women to be a certain way, and used a clip from Austen’s Emma to facilitate this. Finally we discussed the genre of satire, thinking about how Austen pokes fun at the genre of romance. Really wonderful and tuned-in work today everyone, I really enjoyed hearing all your amazing ideas! Keep up the great work and see you next week 🙂

Hi Beth, here is my homework for this week.
Thank you for the stellar lesson, see you next week! ☺️
In my opinion, I think that the most amusing person in this story is Mrs Bennet because she always tells her husband off for silly reasons and she is always going on and on about things, she is also very controlling and she tells people off. Elizabeth Bennet is headstrong and fiercely independent, and despite her initial disapproval of him, she falls in love with and marries Mr. Darcy. Although I still don’t understand why if when they get married, they are like always against each other. I find her really funny because she gets mad for silly things but then she gets better quite easily.

Sorry the link won’t load this is my work:
I think that Mr Bennetis the most amusing character. In a stereotypical Victorian family the male would ‘dominate the household and run the family however in this novel the male is held back and is not seen as greatly as Mrs Bennet. Mrs Bennet is the one making all the decisions; telling her girls what to do and their goals for her; and even telling her husband what to do; leaving Mr Bennet in the background. Mr Bennet is also portrayed as a weak character in the book which would have been amusing to people in the Victorian times as males would not be portrayed as that. One example would be when he is searching for Lydia and fails, he give up and hands the job over to Mr Gardiner. Overall I think that Mr Bennet is the most amusing character for his peculiarity and his differences. In a way, he adds his own twist to the story, making it rather than a typical Victorian book to a unique one with original characters.

I fell like Mr Bennetis is the most amusing character because it’s kind of like he always get overthrown by his wife. Its kind of silly and funny how you think of a time period like that Mr Bennetis would be in charge of the house not Mrs Bennetis because the man is being held back . Mrs Bennetis also is like telling her children what to do and Mr Bennetis would not dare say a word but a stereotypical Victorian house hold it the 1800s ,it would not seem to be very normal in he 1800s Mrs Bennetis is very controlsive about what happened in the house like you can’t do that you can’t go do that and tells Mrs Bennetis off for stupid reasons .

Summary for Lesson 11
In today’s class we continued our work on Pride and Prejudice, thinking in depth about Austen’s writing style and characterisation. We began the lesson with a discussion on themes, thinking about how to frame the novel in terms of the subjects Austen is interested in, before moving on to refreshing our ideas on satire. The class analysed a passage from the text, thinking about what makes it humorous, and spoke beautifully about how she subverts and mocks society’s expectations. We then worked on characterisation, discussing the female characters in the novel before the class came up with some fantastic examples of their own Austen-esque female characters. FEveryone worked excellently today, there were great discussions, ideas and writing shared by the class- fabulous work everyone 😊

Hi Beth, here is my homework for this week
Ding Dong, Ding dong. “I wonder who that could be,” Agatha groaned as she got out of her couch for the first time in three months. She was expecting a parcel. Ding Dong, DING DONG. “Oh, SHUT UP!” se cried as she turned the door handle. It was not a parcel. Outside of the door, was another lady inviting her to a party. She snatched the invitation from her. “The names Edith, by the way,” she added. ” I don’t care what your name is.” Agatha snapped barely taking her eyes of the paper. “Oh, and by the way, you need a partner like a husband.” Agatha glared at her, she was not liking this conversation at all. “I’ll bring my cat thank you very much,” and then she slammed the door in her face.
At home, Agatha thought about the strange lady and the invitation. Why would she invite her? How did she even know her? Well, as this is the first invitation, I suppose I will go. But bring a husband, who does she think I am?

Summary for Lesson 12
In today’s lesson we completed our autumn reading course with our final class on Pride and Prejudice. We spoke about symbols and motifs in the novel, thinking about how they reflect the core themes, before the class moved on to sharing their best ideas in response to debate questions. We discussed the place of moralism in the book, thinking about whether Austen had a discernible moral philosophy that can be seen in the messages in all of her work, before finally ending with some thoughts about the title of the book and making modern satire. Amazing work guys, it has been lovely working with you all over the past twelve weeks, you have worked together fantastically and come up with some really excellent ideas and pieces of work- keep it up and I’ll see you in January 🙂
