Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s lesson we began our study of The Land of Roar by Jenny McLachlan. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help complete the homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on the background and introductory elements of the story, including our work on genre, the theme of growing up and the prompts for the class’ evaluation of the book. The students all completed a creative exercise imagining their own versions of Roar beautifully, and were able to think deeply and in a very sophisticated way about the genre of the book and how it overlaps several different ones. They also shared their own experiences of growing up, which was fantastic to hear, and were able to articulate amazingly why they felt humans were drawn to fantasy. Excellent work today everyone, see you all soon!
Here is the BBC Bitesize website on genre if you’d like to revise it!: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zr77hyc
The homework grid and list of different genres are attached below too.

Summary for Lesson 2
In today’s lesson we continued our study of The Land of Roar by Jenny McLachlan. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help revise. The powerpoint contains all our work on themes, which the students worked on fantastically, our work on characterisation and our creative work on perspective and point of view. The class completed a excellent conscience alley exercise where they used all their persuasive skills to convince Rose whether or not to stay loyal to her family and save them, and they also re-told a passage from the story from a different character’s perspective in a really creative, gorgeous way. I was super impressed by everyone’s work today, keep it up class and I’ll see you Friday! 🙂

Summary for Lesson 3
In today’s lesson we completed our study of The Land of Roar by Jenny McLachlan. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help with the homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on evaluating the book, looking at the notion of conflict in the novel and thinking about why the author made the choices she did. The class wrote some beautiful book reviews, and we learnt about the three step structure for writing the best review possible. They also evaluated whether their feelings on the novel had changed over time, and completed a fab hot-seating exercise where they used inference to work out what McLachlan might answer in an interview. Amazing work today everyone, well done for all your contributions over the last few days! See you all soon and keep up the fab work 🙂

Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s lesson we began our study of The Jamie Drake Equation by Christopher Edge. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, as is the science reading guide which the students should read for homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on the background and introductory elements of the story, including our work on the International Space Station, the class’ prompt to write a diary from the perspective of an astronaut living on the ISS, our work on summarising the story and the prompt for the students’ evaluation of the best and worst parts of the book. Everyone worked beautifully today, they responded to the story in such a varied and creative way and I loved hearing their thoughts on concepts such as the Fermi Paradox and about whether we are alone in the universe. Lovely work everyone, keep it up and I’ll see you in a few days 🙂

The powerpoint contains all our work on the themes and moral of the story, which the class dissected beautifully, along with our thoughts on Jamie’s reaction to downloading alien technology, the conscience alley we completed and finally the students’ thoughts on the narrative structure of the book and the prompt for their thoughts on an alternate (more satisfying?) ending. Absolutely outstanding work today everyone, I thought your energy, ideas and enthusiasm were top notch and our lesson today felt super energetic and packed full of your great contributions. Well done class, I’ll see you Friday. Keep up the wonderful work! 🙂

Summary for Lesson 3
In today’s lesson we completed our study of The Jamie Drake Equation by Christopher Edge. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below which can be used to help with the homework set. The powerpoint contains all our work on creatively reinterpreting the story, thinking about the literary techniques Christopher Edge uses such as foreshadowing and symbolism. The class wrote their own examples of both of these techniques beautifully, and were also able to think really deeply about other elements such as the pacing of the story and how successful Edge is at building suspense. Everyone worked in a super diligent, thoughtful and impressive way today- I thought the students demonstrated some wonderful imaginative re-workings of the novel and grasped some really tricky concepts incredibly well. Amazing work today everyone- you should all be super proud of yourselves! Keep it up and I’ll see you all soon 🙂

Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s lesson we began our study of Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help the students with their research homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on the context of the story, thinking about the freedom and excitement that Sophie finds from climbing the rooftops in Paris and looking at where we could identify moments that we had felt that were similar. The class evaluated the book beautifully, thinking about the questions they would ask the author if they could and considering the background to why she wrote the book in a really engaged and thoughtful way. They also wrote some gorgeous descriptive passages, putting themselves in the author’s shoes. Amazing work today everyone, keep it up and I’ll see you next lesson. Good luck with your research! 🙂
P.S. The factfile on Victorian Britain is on Slide 8 of the PowerPoint

In today’s lesson we completed our study of Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below which can be used to help with the homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on creatively reinterpreting the story, thinking about the quirky and unusual style with which Rundell writes (which the students mirrored beautifully in their work on metaphor and witticisms), the setting of the book and how the class could alter it, the perception Victorians would have had of Sophie and her lifestyle, and finally our thoughts on the lessons that can be learned from this book and the class’s final reflections. Everyone worked wonderfully today, I was so impressed by their imaginative work and their contributions. You were all fab today everyone, have a lovely weekend and I’ll see you on Monday! 🙂

Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s lesson we began our study of Clockwork by Philip Pullman. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help the students with their thinking homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on the genre of the story, thinking about the genres of mystery and fairytales in depth, our work thinking about how the dark fairytales of the Brothers Grimm relate to this book, the idea of bad behaviour being punished severely in the novel, and finally our evaluations of the best and worst parts of the story. Everyone worked beautifully today, really amazing thoughts on the genre and style of this book guys! I particularly liked hearing your thoughts on whether we should or should not be sympathetic to Karl which I think you guys all thought about wonderfully. Good luck with thinking about the message this book is trying to send and I will see you all in a couple days 🙂

In today’s lesson we completed our study of Clockwork by Philip Pullman. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below which can be used to help with the homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on creatively reinterpreting the story, thinking about how to see Karl’s Faustian bargain through the eyes of both the devil and angel on his shoulder, whilst also discussing the relevance of Pullman’s inspirations to the novel, and our thoughts on the themes and moral of the story. Everyone came up with some great ideas today- fantastic work everyone! It was lovely to hear all your opinions on the meaning of the key quotation from the novel and how this linked to the mechanisation of humanity. You also wrote some gorgeous persuasive speeches. It has been so great to teach you all over the last few weeks- amazing work everyone, I look forward to seeing you all again in the future. Have a lovely rest of the summer! 🙂
