      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s lesson we began our study of Fly Me Home by Polly Ho-Yen. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help plan and write the mini paragraphs assigned for homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on the context of the story, thinking in particular about the plight of refugees and why it is important to listen to the experiences of people who have been through the process of being forced to leave their country. We had a great discussion on how important inclusion is, and how Leelu’s experiences in the book can teach us to be more open and welcoming people. The class had some beautiful ideas about ways in which they could help a refugee who had just moved to this country, and thought very deeply about the ways in which Fly Me Home can help us understand the different lives people lead and why it is important to be kind. The class also came up with some fantastic interview questions for the author, working out exactly what they would like to hear from her side of the story. Everyone worked beautifully today, well done guys and I’ll see you all soon! 🙂

      Hi Beth!

So here is the paragraph I wrote based on the topic “What makes a home a home”:

In my opinion, a home is a place that holds important memories and a place that brings you comfort. Home means an enjoyable, happy place where you can live, laugh and learn. It’s somewhere where you are loved, respected, and cared for. Home doesn’t have to be a household. For example ,in Harry Potter, Harry has never actually called number 4 privet drive his “Home”, but often refered Hogwarts as his “Home”. The reason for thta is because, Harry can really feel that he belongs to Hogwarts, the school gives him a sense of security while privet drive for him is only a place to stay in during the summer holidays. The same goes for Leelu. She doesn’t think London is home because she never feels secure ,and that feeling increased when Tiber started disapearing every night leaving her alone in the house. Leelu doesn’t feel like she belong there and London does not bring her comfort. We also don’t see her laughing or smiling alot through out the book, I think it has something to do with her not fitting in in London. Somewhere you can call home in my opinion is some where you actually feel like you belong to.

She moves to London with her mum and brother. But leaves her dad behind. Her mum said they left him behind because he had work to do, but her dad is speaking up for gay people because in her country you were not allowed to be gay.Leelu isn’t comfortable in her new home because she missed her dad so badly.

      Summary for Lesson 2

In today’s lesson we continued our study of Fly Me Home by Polly Ho-Yen. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help revise. The powerpoint contains all our work on themes, which the students were able to identify and evidence beautifully, our work on characterisation and finally our thoughts on the significance of symbolism in the novel. The class discussed the way Leelu’s relationships change fantastically, and wrote a brilliant account of these changes from Leelu’s perspective. They also grasped the notion of symbolism excellently and were able to infer many different symbolic ideas from the novel, particularly when thinking about the treasures. Amazing work today everyone, I was super impressed by all of your concentration and hard work. Keep it up and I’ll see you soon! 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 3

In today’s lesson we completed our study of Fly Me Home by Polly Ho-Yen. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help with the homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on literary techniques in the novel, thinking about how metaphor and similes in particular are used to communicate the themes of the story. The class considered the meaning behind the book’s title and then creatively imagined one of their own, which was fantastic! They also did some beautiful work coming up with their own literary techniques based on the story, and finally thought of some brilliant alternative endings to the story. Really excellent work today everyone, you should all give yourselves a big pat on the back for all your excellent ideas and contributions today. Keep it up and I’ll see you on Monday! 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s lesson we began our study of The Land of Roar by Jenny McLachlan. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help complete the homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on the background and introductory elements of the story, including our work on genre, the theme of growing up and the prompts for the class’ evaluation of the book. The students all completed a creative exercise imagining their own versions of Roar beautifully, and were able to think deeply and in a very sophisticated way about the genre of the book and how it overlaps several different ones. They also shared their own experiences of growing up, which was fantastic to hear, and were able to articulate amazingly why they felt humans were drawn to fantasy. Excellent work today everyone, see you all soon! 🙂

Here is the BBC Bitesize website on genre if you’d like to revise it!: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zr77hyc

The homework grid and list of different genres are attached below too.

      Summary for Lesson 3

In today’s lesson we completed our study of The Land of Roar by Jenny McLachlan. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help with the homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on evaluating the book, looking at the notion of conflict in the novel and thinking about why the author made the choices she did. The class wrote some beautiful book reviews, and we learnt about the three step structure for writing the best review possible. They also evaluated whether their feelings on the novel had changed over time, and completed a fab hot-seating exercise where they used inference to work out what McLachlan might answer in an interview. Amazing work today everyone, well done for all your contributions over the last few days! See you all soon and keep up the fab work

      Hi Beth!

I think that “believing is just the begining” means that believing in your childhood dreams is just the begining of finding them back. Like in The Land of Roar, when Authur and Rose finally believed in Roar  again, they found themselves actually in Roar.

So this is my opinion based on the topic. Sorry it might be a bit short, I just can’t really find other good examples to explain this.

      Thank you!

        Hi Eva,

Yes, a brilliant explanation of the quote! I like the example you’ve used here, as it’s such a clear demonstration of ‘believing’ and then having your life changed in some way, showing that it is just the ‘beginning’. No worries about the short answer, you’ve captured it well.

Well done, see you soon 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s lesson we began our study of The Jamie Drake Equation by Christopher Edge. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, as is the science reading guide which the students should read for homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on the background and introductory elements of the story, including our work on the International Space Station, the class’ prompt to write a diary from the perspective of an astronaut living on the ISS, our work on summarising the story and the prompt for the students’ evaluation of the best and worst parts of the book. Everyone worked beautifully today, they responded to the story in such a varied and creative way and I loved hearing their thoughts on concepts such as the Fermi Paradox and about whether we are alone in the universe. Lovely work everyone, keep it up and I’ll see you in a few days 🙂

      Hi Beth,

      sorry for late submission.

      Believing is just the beginning(moral)

If you are believing in something like a land don’t forget it, don’t put it in the back of your mind.

Try thinking of it,aiming it, never give up. what if it might be true. You might be like the kids in the Land of roar going into your own imaginary world. Look at how much fun they had, it would be amazing if I could go there.

        Hi Feite,

No worries at all! This is a great answer, and I like how you’ve framed it as if you also believe in this moral, and you’re telling us (the reader) how we can use it in our everyday lives. You make a good reference to the text and the Land itself. I would love to see you giving us an example of the fun the children had there, just to make it even more clear and linked to the text itself.

Well done, see you soon 🙂

The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below which can be used to help with the homework set. The powerpoint contains all our work on creatively reinterpreting the story, thinking about the literary techniques Christopher Edge uses such as foreshadowing and symbolism. The class wrote their own examples of both of these techniques beautifully, and were also able to think really deeply about other elements such as the pacing of the story and how successful Edge is at building suspense. Everyone worked in a super diligent, thoughtful and impressive way today- I thought the students demonstrated some wonderful imaginative re-workings of the novel and grasped some really tricky concepts incredibly well. In today’s lesson we began our study of Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help the students with their research homework. The powerpoint contains all our work on the context of the story, thinking about the freedom and excitement that Sophie finds from climbing the rooftops in Paris and looking at where we could identify moments that we had felt that were similar. The class evaluated the book beautifully, thinking about the questions they would ask the author if they could and considering the background to why she wrote the book in a really engaged and thoughtful way. They also wrote some gorgeous descriptive passages, putting themselves in the author’s shoes. Amazing work today everyone, keep it up and I’ll see you next lesson. Good luck with your research! 🙂

Why it’s called the Jamie Drake equation

It was called the Jamie Drake equation because his dad was going to space and Jamie found an alien named Buzz. The  Drake equation is about aliens and space so there is a connection between these two. That’s why it is called the Jamie Drake equation.

      What title I would chose

I would call it How I met an alien because from the middle of the book to the end of the book Buzz was there helping Jamie finding his dad. He was an important character so that’s why I think this title would be great.

Gorgeous work Feite, fantastic thinking about the way in which the Drake equation plays into the plot and important moments of the novel, and I love the way you have focused in on the importance of science and maths to the core meaning behind the book. I also love your original take on the title, and love how you have explained your choice- really lovely work! My only correction would be to remember that book titles should be capitalised and in italics or speech marks (i.e. The Jamie Drake Equation or “How I Met an Alien”). Overall, great ideas and a fantastic original take on how to change the title.
