      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s lesson we began our study of Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help plan and write the paragraphs assigned for homework. The powerpoint contains lots of ideas on the historical context of the play and how it connects to the central themes and motifs of the play, thinking particularly about the role of both the monarchy and ideas around witchcraft within the book. It also contains our work on The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and our thinking about how the Great Chain of Being influenced contemporary opinions on regicide, along with our ideas of what lies at the beating heart of the play, in other words, what the play is all about. The class worked really well today, I particularly enjoyed hearing their thoughts on how religion, ideas of witchcraft and the anxieties of the monarchy influenced the play, and thought their grasp of the ways in which Shakespeare would have been censored was fantastic. They also had a really interesting discussion on whether Macbeth was a dangerous play for Shakespeare to write, and came up with some excellent contributions regarding what the idea of the play being cursed can tell us about 17th century England. Really well done everyone, keep up the amazing work and I will see you all next week 😊

      Hello Beth,

      Good Evening.

This is my homework for lesson 2.

      Kevin

P.S. I have used some old-fashioned words. Please can you make some suggestions where I can use other old-fashioned words to replace the ‘modern’ words?

      Summary for Lesson 2

In today’s lesson we continued our study of Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help plan and write the diary entries assigned for homework. The powerpoint contains lots of ideas on characterisation, the historical context of women in Jacobean society, the class’s analysis themes and our discussion of the genre of tragedy. Everyone worked fantastically today, really well done guys! I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on how to understand the character of Lady Macbeth in the context, and thought that your discussion of the conventions of tragedy in the play was really exceptional. Keep up the amazing work and I look forward to reading the diary entries you come up with 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 3

In today’s lesson we completed our study of Macbeth. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help plan and write the original scenes assigned for homework. The powerpoint contains our thoughts and ideas on the modernisation of Macbeth, thinking about the purpose of creating dramatic interpretations of Macbeth that draw on different settings, character and language from the original Shakespearean version. We analysed a soliloquy from Macbeth in this light, thinking about how Shakespeare’s poetic language and use of literary techniques could be translated into an original/ modernised version. We also looked at ways in which other people have reimagined the characters from Macbeth, considering three different presentations of the Weird Sisters and evaluating their effectiveness. I particularly enjoyed hearing the class’ thoughts on how, in the versions in which the witches were nurses and school children, our preconceived ideas of the supernatural were subverted, creating a real sense of fear and horror. This was really fantastic analysis guys! Everyone worked beautifully today, I really loved hearing all your ideas for how you would creatively alter the play and make it your own whilst retaining the essential character of Shakespeare’s version. You all had such interesting and exciting ideas and all were able to think in an original way about how you could reinterpret the play. It has been lovely working with you all and I really look forward to reading what you come up with! See you all soon 😊
