Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s class we focused on poetry in the GCSE exam, using the Edexcel poetry anthology to help us. We looked at an overview of how to treat poems, digging into how to manage poetry where the themes are shrouded in metaphor and how to utilise imagery, the title and emotion to help get to the core of a poem. We analysed two different poems, focusing on form, structure and meaning, and learned about the key forms of poetry the class should be aware of for GCSE-level analysis. We looked at some important poetic techniques and finally the students looked over a six-step structure to help them remember the different components of poetic analysis. Amazing work today everyone, you all shared beautifully throughout class and came up with some brilliant analyses. Well done & see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 2
In today’s class we completed our work on GCSE poetry analysis, thinking in depth about essay writing, structure and theme. We spoke about ensuring that any language analysis is done with reference to structure & form and vice versa, considering the importance of treating authorial decisions in context. We looked at two GCSE poems, one by Hardy, and one by Byron, and picked them apart, closely analysing their text. We watched a video on how structural analysis functions and finally thought about the essay structure used in a poetry essay, planning these out based on the Byron poem. Lovely work today class, particularly in your close analysis. Very well done for your concentration and hard work and have a lovely week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 3
In today’s class we started work on prose analysis, thinking about how to integrate writing elements and techniques with the broader themes and deeper analytical concepts in their writing. We thought initially about the form of the short story and how to treat GCSE unseen prose like a short story in its own right when thinking about it analytically. We also spoke about quotations and how to unpick them with reference to lots of different narrative techniques, read a professional literary analysis of a Samuel Beckett extract and the class analysed an excerpt from Crime and Punishment beautifully, commenting on the narrator’s mental state and how it is depicted. Wonderful work everyone, particularly when analysing the final extract- great job and have a lovely week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 4
In today’s class we continued our work on prose analysis, using the short story the students had read for homework as the basis for an analytical exercise. We discussed the class’s initial reactions to the story before using elements of literature to dig into the specifics of the way the author has put the text together, analysing it according to elements such as setting, mood, POV, character, etc. We learned some short story analysis techniques and then the class applied these in small groups to an AQA past paper, sharing ideas with one another and coming up with some initial ideas on the text, focusing on the main scoop. Wonderful work everyone, well done and keep sharing all your ideas. See you next week 🙂
Alternative question (on Korea): How does the author create an atmosphere of suspense?

Summary for Lesson 5
In today’s class we began looking at GCSE play analysis, thinking about the ways in which drama gets asked about in the exam format and digging into the different aspects the students should consider. We spoke about the way in which structure and dramatic action are different in plays and thought about the importance of character, often over language. We then looked at examples from the GCSE syllabus and the class unpicked key dramatic techniques and their effect. Finally we touched on the play DNA which the class will be looking at for homework. Well done today guys, some fantastic ideas, particularly on the importance of the visual in drama. Keep up the great work 🙂

Summary for Lesson 6
In today’s class we continued our work on GCSE drama analysis, thinking today about Shakespearean texts. We began with discussing some tips from a video on how to analyse plays, picking apart the structure and thinking about elements such as the visual representation of the action onstage. We then learned some key ways of tackling Shakespeare, particularly with old-fashioned language, and the class looked at an analysis of Romeo and Juliet that unpicked the character dynamics by examining structure and form. Finally the class completed their own analyses of Shakespeare extracts, thinking about the way language communicated the theme fantastically, and all shared some really good ideas. Well done everyone, keep up the great work and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 7
In today’s lesson we thought about non-fiction analysis, learning about how to dissect articles, essays and memoirs given in the GCSE context. We watched a video that explored audience, tone and style before looking at a past paper. We read through it together and the class then analysed language in break-out rooms which they did beautifully, considering the way the information was presented through structure & language. Finally we shared ideas and honed our analytical skillset, bouncing ideas off one another. Well done today everyone, strong and purposeful analysis that I really enjoyed hearing! Keep up the fab work 🙂

Summary for Lesson 8
In today’s class we continued work on non-fiction analysis, this time beginning with an article and working backwards. We spoke about the kinds of things examiners may look for when selecting an article to test students on, thinking about techniques and how to utilise them. We then used the Guardian’s opinion page to select articles for which the students then wrote GCSE-style exam questions, carefully considering language, structure and the way these papers tend to work. The class then read over a final resource considering what techniques to consider when considering non-fiction language, and finally brainstormed their own answers. Some lovely work today everyone, well done and keep up the hard work! 🙂

Summary for Lesson 9
In today’s class we completed a workshop where we thought through everything we’ve learned about this course in advance of the exam. We looked at a step-by-step language analysis, interjecting our own ideas with each class member sharing a great point about the writer’s craft. We thought in depth about the effect of particular structural and linguistic techniques and went back to the four genres we’ve studied in this course. Finally we had a Q&A, discussing elements such as the importance of emotional engagement in analysis. Wonderful work everyone, good luck with revision and see you next week 🙂
