Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s class we began work on the Stuart era, thinking about the global context of the 17th and 18th centuries and the Enlightenment. We started our lesson with an overview of Stuart England before thinking about the Enlightenment across Europe and the important religious, political, philosophical and scientific ideas that arose from it. We learned about key thinkers and theories, looked at a timeline pertaining to the most significant moments and lastly discussed the relationship between science and philosophy at the time. Really great and on-the-ball work today guys, I was super impressed by your wonderful concentration and absorption of big philosophical ideas. Keep up the amazing work, see you soon 🙂

Summary for Lesson 2
In today’s class we focused on a localised overview of Stuart Britain, focusing on the UK. We began by learning about some of the key events of the period, before discussing why the period may have been overlooked in historiography. The class argued for which events they found the most compelling from the period and learned about the later monarchs such as Anne who are rarely mentioned. We then put the Stuarts on trial, thinking about whether the students felt they were successful as a dynasty and questioning the extent to which they acted or were acted upon. Really brilliant work today everyone- fantastic historical knowledge and a really strong grasp of historiographical debate. Keep it up and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 3
In today’s class we focused on the rule of James I, which we looked at through the lens of religion. We began by learning about the Gunpowder Plot (1605) questioning why it was still remembered so vividly before moving on to thinking about religion and how it functioned under James. We spoke about James as a moderate and discussed what his approach to religion teaches us about the limits and privileges of monarchy at the time. Finally the class read an example essay on the topic of James’ religious tolerance. Well done for all your focus on concentration class- you did fantastically with today’s topic. Keep it up and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 4
In today’s class we thought about witchcraft and philosophy, digging into the witch hysteria under James I and questioning what this told us about Stuart notions of religion, gender and science. We began with an overarching discussion of what the class knew about witchcraft at this time before watching a Crash Course History video on the history of European witchcraft in the 16th and 17th centuries. We then learned about James I’s personal obsession with witches and read a source from the book he wrote on the subject, analysing what it tells us about Stuart Britain. Really impressive work today everyone, your ideas on religion and gender in particular were absolutely brilliant and you were all engaged and on the ball throughout. Well done and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 5
In today’s class we focused on the history of colonisation in the 17th century, looking in particular at America. We began by discussing the key terms of colonisation and globalisation before watching an overview of the US colonies int the 17th century. We discussed what this and the story of Jamestown could show us about Britain at the time before finally landing on Hobbes’ Leviathan, thinking about its significance. Amazing work class, well done and see you next week for the Civil War! 🙂

Summary for Lesson 6
In today’s class we started learning about the English Civil War, a topic we will continue next week. We focused on the political theory behind the war, learning about both Thomas Hobbes and John Locke as examples of two very different political outlooks in the 17th century and applying this to thinking about monarchy and government in the Stuart period. The class debated fantastically on the role of government and the ideas of these theorists and we finally looked at how the English Civil War broke out, relating this back to the Hobbesian and Lockean premises we had learned about in the first half. As I said in class guys, you should be immensely proud of yourselves today; really impressive work from all of you, particularly in sharing ideas on some very complex philosophical topics. Well done, it was great to see you all and see you next week 🙂

I kind of rambled on about some things which were not really that related. But the thing which links that Three monarchs is that they were all overthrown but war…

Summary for Lesson 7
In today’s class we continued studying the English Civil War, learning about the trial of Charles I and its aftermath. We began with a rundown of the events of the war, thinking about what it meant for ordinary people at the time, before discussing the trial of Charles I and whether it was a show trial. The class completed some research brilliantly and in the final section of our class we looked at Cromwell’s rule and the ways in which it was similar to the reign of a King. We debated whether he was a hero or villain to conclude- really great discussion by the way everyone, well done! Excellent historical analyses all round, keep it up and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 8
In today’s class we worked on the art & literature of the Stuart era, thinking about poetry, writing and art and what it tells us about the 17th and 18th centuries. We began with Paradise Lost, the famous Milton epic, before moving on to researching writers of the class’s choice, thinking what it tells us about the history. The class shared some amazing ideas on the artists of the time and what it tells us before we learned about the Renaissance, linking the ideas common to this period to the art it produced and thinking about what this relationship involves. Fabulous work everyone, well done for all your great ideas and beautiful research on the lives of authors and artists. Well done and see you next time 🙂

Summary for Lesson 9
In today’s class we workshopped the history exam and thought about society in the Stuart period. We began with a brief Q&A on essay writing and the 18th century before thinking about two key events of the Stuart era- the Great Fire of London and the outbreak of the Plague in the 1660s. We learned about life for ordinary people at this time and the class then studied these two events, workshopping essay intros on the question of what events such as these teach us about the period as a whole. Fantastic work today everyone, thank you for your patience and incredible teamwork. You have all been great today, keep it up and see you next time 🙂
