Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s class we began our work on Tudor England, thinking about a period overview and some key ideas and themes in the Tudor times. We began with sharing key knowledge the class had on the Tudors already before watching an overview of the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. We spoke about why we know so much more about the Tudors than other royal families and thought about the Battle of Bosworth and its significance. The class then debated beautifully on how modern historiography has changed the way we look at the past, using the example of recent history on race in the Tudor era as an example. Great, engaging work today class, well done for all your incredible ideas about what we can learn from different ways of looking at history. Keep up the fantastic ideas and get ready to dig into Henry VII next time- see you then! 🙂

Summary for Lesson 2
In today’s class we began our study of the Tudor dynasty through looking at Henry VII, learning about his reign and the challenges to it. We began with a discussion of how a monarch consolidates their power & what their priorities may be, before learning an overview of Henry’s rule and his paranoia at being displaced. The class then completed a research task where they came up with answers to comprehension questions before we learned some interesting facts about him as a monarch. We then completed some source work based on Virgil’s history of Henry VII’s reign, thinking about what we could infer. Excellent work today everyone, well done for your thorough historical analysis and fantastic contributions to discussions. See you next week 🙂

Tudor history.
Henry VII had many problems when he claimed the throne. One of them was him being an usurper. Henry VII became king by defeating Richard III in battle which meant that he was vulnerable to being overthrown by someone else who might do the same to him.
The next one were the pretenders. Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck pretended to have the right to the throne and tried to take it from Henry. However, Henry defeated both of them. He also set them free but Warbeck decided to revolt. It failed, and Henry had to have him hanged to prevent him from causing more trouble.
One of the last ones were the nobles. They were powerful and had their own armies, some of them had switched sides during the War of the Roses. Henry used rewards and punishments to control them from causing trouble and having him kicked off the throne.

Tudor history
Perkin Warbeck was a pretender to the English throne claiming to be Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, who was the second son of Edward IV and one of the so-called ‘princes in the tower’. Due to the uncertainty as to whether Richard had died (either of some natural cause or having been murdered at the Tower of London) or whether he had somehow survived. Warbeck’s claim gained some support.
Warbeck made several landings in England backed by small armies but met strong resistance from the King’s men and surrendered in Hampshire in 1497. Warbeck emerged as a significant threat to the newly established ‘Tudor Dynasty’ Henry declared Warbeck an imposter.
Dealing with Warbeck cost Henry VII £13ooo (equivalent to 10879000 in 2021) putting a strain on Henry VII’s weak state finances and so, affected his kingship. This was bad because he didn’t have a strong right to have the throne and so, could get him kicked out.

Summary for Lesson 3
In today’s class we continued our course on the Tudors, learning today about Henry VIII and his impact on history. The class began with some excellent independent research, sharing surprising facts they gleaned from this before we moved on to reading primary and secondary sources on Henry VIII and evaluating their utility. We watched a summation of the historical debate over Henry’s reign and finally learned about the Break with Rome and its importance within the Tudor context. Well done for all your engagement today everyone- you came up with great historical analyses of Henry as a personality and as a monarch and worked beautifully with source material. Keep up the great work and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 4
Today we focused on the reigns of Edward VI and Mary I, thinking about what we can gather from learning about their reigns in the period more generally. We began with an overview of Edward’s reign, then dug into an article arguing Edward would have been as tyrannical and his father had he lived. We learned about Lady Jane Grey, discussing what her story tells us about the nature of gender and monarchy, and finally focused on Mary, completing source work on her legacy and discussing how she has been perceived through the historiography. Wonderful and attentive work everyone, really well done. Keep up the fantastic job you are all doing and see you next time 🙂

Summary for Lesson 6
In today’s class we studied civil society across the Tudor period, our first thematic lesson. We began by defining civil society before learning about the phenomenon of urbanisation in the Tudor period and discussing how this may have changed social structures. The class read an essay on Tudor society and then shared some excellent thoughts on what it revealed before we finally touched on how modern scholarship has challenged traditional historiographical conceptions of Tudor England, particularly when it comes to conversations around race. Lovely ideas today everyone- remember to read the rest of that Black Tudors article if you get a spare minute, it is really interesting. You’ve all been great today, keep it up and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 7
In today’s class we looked at religion in the Tudor period, thinking about the significance of the Break with Rome, and digging into the ways in which life changed over this period. We learned about the Break with Rome, looked at the key differences between Protestant beliefs and Catholic ones and thought about the link between religion and crime in this period. The class completed some source analysis which they did fantastically and debated some key points about what we can learn from looking at the transfer of religious authority from the Pope to the king. Amazing ideas today class, well done for taking in a lot of complex information. Keep up the great work 🙂

Summary for Lesson 8
In today’s class we focused on art and literature in the Tudor period. We began with a discussion of what culture and art tell us about a society, digging into questions of social norms, materials, technology and existential concerns. We then spoke about what Shakespeare can reveal about this time period and watched a video outlining some of the literary greats of the Tudor times. The class then completed a research task on a piece of art, theatre, literature or music from that time (which they did brilliantly) before we had a really interesting discussion on the way image-making, politics and art came together in Elizabeth I’s reign and how the historiography has emphasised her presentation of gender, characterising it as theatrical and artistic. Amazing ideas today everyone, this was such a great lesson and you were all fantastically engaged. Well done 🙂

hi beth here is my homework
Hans Holbein the Younger
Hans is known for his speciality in portraits of the monarchs such as Anne boleyn,Thomas more and king henry viii. Hans was a German-Swiss artist, painted remarkable portraits during the Tudor era. His art reflected a unique blend of continental and English aesthetics, making him one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century.
Hans was behind almost every Tudor portraits you might see to this day. Hans had a collective imagination. It is said that he was a gifted northern renaissance portraits. Hans artworks are displayed in the metropolitan museum of art in January the 8th 2023. hans artworks depicts monarchs in pictures that we see today standing out but we do not know the owners of the pieces of art work lost in the minds of the Tudors. Tudor art is all about the monarch and occasional about random stuff. Hans farther hans Holbein the elder and his uncle Sigmund were renown for there consecrative examples of late Gothic paintings in Germany. Hans worked in Basel during 1515-25. for most of hans life he kept a low profile though when he was 28 he would achieve a remarkable success in England. The success was the painting of sir Thomas more.

hi beth here is my mock
Does henry the v11 1 deserve his reputation and tyrant and why?
Some facts about henry:
Henry VIII became king when he was eighteen years old.
· Henry VIII wanted a son to be king when he died. Henry’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, only had a daughter. Henry wanted to divorce her but the Pope didn’t allow it.
· Henry started the Church of England. He was head of the new Church and he could do what he liked. He divorced Catherine and married Anne Boleyn.
· Henry married so many times because he was desperate to have a son. From bbc
No I don’t think so partly yes and partly no lets us explore in why
Yes because he killed many people in act of saying treason he uprooted the whole catholic religion gust to get what he wanted a divorce henry thought his marriage with chatelaine of argon was invalid because marring your brothers widow was a no no at the time. Even then, Henry was only willing to go through the Pope for the divorce, until reformers like Anne Boleyn, Thomas Cromwell and Thomas Crammer, pushed him to go further.Henry was so desperate to marry Anne that he went along with it, and after Anne’s death tried to undo all the reformist measures, except the supremacy. The only reason he married so many times because he wanted a son.
