Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s class we began our history lesson, thinking today about the chronology, history and context of the 11th century. We thought about the decades leading up to the Battle of Hastings, discussing the different eras England underwent and dissecting the concept of the Middle Ages and Dark Ages. We learned about the impact of the Normans across Europe and spoke about key elements of Norman rule from religion to the Doomsday Book. Excellent work today everyone- it was amazing to hear all your ideas about different ways in which we categorise historical periods and to discuss the events surrounding 1066 from many different angles. Keep up the great work and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 2
In today’s class we focused on monarchy, thinking about what monarchy was in the 11th century. We started the class by thinking about problems of periodisation, reading articles regarding the moniker of ‘the Dark Age’, before moving on to a history of the crown up to and beyond 1066. We learned about William I’s path to power, thought about analysing a source on him, and finally discussed the Great Chain of Being and what it tells us about this period of time. Wonderful work everyone- it was great to chat and debate with you all about these concepts, keep it up and see you soon 🙂

Summary for Lesson 3
In today’s class we studied religion in the Middle Ages, touching on various subjects from the politics of religion to the Crusades, to the social role of the church. We began with 10 facts about medieval religion which the class then pulled out surprising features of, before learning about the Crusades and thinking about what they suggest to us about the function of religion. We spoke about the power of the Pope, and the economic power of the church and looked at a Doom Painting from 1200 which depicted heaven and hell in the medieval imagination. We also touched on how medieval wars still are spoken about today in geopolitical debates and thought about what this tells us. Really good work today class, well done for all your analyses and inventive ideas. It was great to see you- see you soon 🙂

Summary for Lesson 4
In today’s class we focused on the art & literature of the Middle Ages, thinking about the types of stories and artwork they produced and what it tells us about medieval life. We looked at Dante, Chaucer, morality plays, Beowulf and Arthurian legend, whilst also discussing the class’s own knowledge and conception of medieval storytelling. We also looked at the pietas of the 13th century and thought about their connection to the Crusades and the Black Death. Finally, we looked at the key artistic styles of the time (Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic) and finished with final thoughts on religion, morality and mythology in this time period. Brilliant work today class, well done for all your amazing hard work and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 5
In today’s class we discussed medieval warfare thinking about the mythology of knighthood, medieval warfare techniques and what these suggest about life in the Middle Ages. We began with watching a Cambridge University Lecture on the development of knighthood, to give us some background understanding of the time period, who knights were and what their code of conduct entailed. We then challenged the idea of chivalry, looking at ideas of romanticisation and hypothesising why myths around knights became so popular. We learned about how warfare developed throughout the period, thinking about the increasing technology associated with warfare, and finally discussed things such as siege tactics. Amazing work everyone, well done for all your fantastic contributions and thoughts throughout the lesson today. I hope you enjoyed and will see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 6
In today’s class we focused on the ideas, philosophies and beliefs of medieval people. We began with discussing myths about the Middle Ages that are untrue (i.e., that they thought the Earth was flat) before moving on to thinking about the Zodiac man and what this tells us about medieval ideas. We looked at medieval superstitions, spoke about how this linked to religion, and finally discussed what the feudal system teaches us about the philosophy and politics of the time period. Amazing discussion, research and debate today everyone- well done for all the confident and well-thought-out work. See you next time 🙂

Summary for Lesson 7
In today’s class we focused our lesson on medieval conceptions of gender and race. We began by thinking about our assumptions about what life was like for non-white people and women in medieval Britain. We then learned about the life of medieval women, comparing this to our prior conceptions. We spoke about how women accessed power, surprising facts about literacy rates but also about the forms of oppression they suffered under. We then moved on to learning about the construction of race at this time, thinking about how the crusades were used to engineer racism against Muslim people by the Pope. We read an article on race at this time and the class did some excellent group discussion work which they were fantastic at. Finally we touched on ideas about the pogroms against Jewish people in England in the 1100s. Really nuanced and thoughtful work today everyone, well done for all your wonderful work as ever. I look forward to our next lesson 🙂

Summary for Lesson 8
In today’s class we focused on medieval medicine and technology, thinking about how medieval people conceived of medicine and how this linked with core concepts like Christianity. We began by discussing the Black Death, thinking about its impact on medieval society and then the class completed a group research task fantastically on different elements of medieval medicine. They worked beautifully together in groups and then presented ideas confidently and articulately. We spoke about medicine and gender, alongside things such as the Hippocratic Oath and the theory of opposites. Finally we touched on the role of technology in medicine, considering how it drives technological advancement and had a Q&A session on medieval medicine. Well done everyone- really strong work today and excellent teamwork too. It was great seeing you all, thank you for being fab as ever and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 9
In today’s class we completed our content lessons on medieval history in preparation for the mini mock next week. We began by discussing the work of Michel Foucault, thinking about what his theories regarding power, discipline and the medical gaze can reveal about the Middle Ages. We then applied this to thinking about civil society and the Peasants’ Revolt and spoke about what medieval social structures reveal about the past. The class read over a resource on medieval society and shared ideas and questions, and finally wrote an introductory essay paragraph on the Peasant’s Revolt. We then spoke about crime and the law and what it reveals to finish. Well done today everyone, you all took in some big philosophical ideas fantastically and applied them to the history. Good luck with revision, thank you for all the brilliant attention and engagement you brought today and see you next week 🙂
