Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s lesson we began our work on poetry analysis, thinking today about a three-step approach to analysing poetry. We began with an initial discussion of literary analysis and how prose and poetry differ, before moving on to discussing poetry more generally with the class sharing some beautiful thoughts on their favourite poems. We then learned a three-pronged approach to analysing unseen poetry (personal response, theme and meaning, techniques) and applied this to a poem from a GCSE paper, digging into the poem in depth. Amazing work everyone, well done for all your diligence and great ideas today. You were all fantastically engaged and it was lovely to see you all, see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 2
In today’s class we continued our poetry analysis, working today on question types that require the students to compare two poems. We began with the students reading about how to compare poems by theme, form/ structure and language, looking at an essay structure for how to do so, before reading a new poem to compare to last week’s unseen. We spoke about the poems and how they present youth and the passage of time, digging into techniques such as enjambment, imagery and symbolism. We then looked at a ten-step poetry analysis structure and then touched on the poem the class will be comparing for homework. Excellent and analytical work today everyone, well done for your diligence and creative interpretation. See you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 3
In today’s class we began work on GCSE Shakespearean analysis, thinking about how to approach a Shakespeare text in the exam. We spoke about the unique challenges Shakespeare presents and the class shared their experience of his writing and language. We learned techniques such as visualisation and breaking the text down into patterns and images and thought about ways in which to access the meaning behind the prose. The class shared some brilliant ideas then on an extract from Macbeth, thinking about ways in which to pick apart the presentation of guilt. Wonderful and impassioned work today everyone, well done and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 4
In today’s lesson we continued our work on Shakespearean analysis, learning today about pentametre, verse, structure and techniques in Shakespeare’s writing. We began by thinking about the homework before applying the ideas we had learned to a passage from Macbeth, digging into the way Shakespeare uses metre and rhyme. We looked at a GCSE style analysis and then applied all of this to Sonnet 116 which the class each shared some excellent thoughts on. Well done for all your hard work everyone- you all exhibited your analysis skills wonderfully today. Keep up the great work and see you next week 🙂

Hi Beth!
Thank you for the superb lesson! I did not manage to write as much for this response, as I was struggling a little with finding the correct quotes to base my analysis off of. I personnally feel like I understand the text, but feel like it is a little bit hard to put the reasons why I think their relationship is like that in to words. Also, deep apologies for the lateness of the work, as I was rather busy this week. Thank you once again!!

Summary for Lesson 5
In today’s lesson we looked at Victorian texts in the GCSE, thinking about the common genres and themes in this. We began by thinking about the ways in which this type of text is both beneficial and challenging in the GCSE exam, digging into concepts such as the floral language and historical context, before discussing Victorian attitudes to religion, gender and class. We talked about common genres and then learned about Romanticism, applying this to a GCSE passage in analysing the language and techniques used. Wonderful and inspired work today everyone, really well done for all your close attention to detail and excellent analyses of the ways in which the context matters. Keep up the great work and see you soon 🙂

Summary for Lesson 6
In today’s class we completed our work on Victorian literature in the GCSE, focusing today on the Gothic. We began by defining the Gothic and thinking about why it may be common in the GCSE exam, focusing on how suspense can be analysed and learning about conventions of Victorian novel writing (i.e., obtrusive narrators) that map onto the genre. The class then applied everything we’d learned to a series of three Victorian Gothic extracts which they analysed, completed GCSE comprehension questions on and finally debated with reference to several broad topics, from narrative to theme. Really excellent work everyone- you all shared beautifully and were engaged and clocked in throughout. Beautiful analysis too! Keep up the great work, the booklet is attached below, and see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 7
Today we began our work on the final genre we are studying in this course: modern literature. We began by discussing our expectations of modern literature, before thinking about how the plainer style of 20th and 21st-century literature can make discussions of elements such as imagery more important. We learned about different kinds of figurative imagery and the class wrote some examples of their own, before applying this to a modern text from an AQA past paper. We discussed the types of imagery used, and finally, they completed some group discussions, analysing the text using exam questions as a jumping-off point. Well done for your excellent team work everyone and for all your brilliant discussions of the text – you all shared wonderfully today and it was great to see you all digging into these ideas so comprehensively. Really impressive group discussion work! Amazing job, see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 8
In today’s class we continued our work on modern literature, thinking today about literary movements of the 20th and 21st century and why they are important to learn about in order to understand GCSE texts. We began by discussing the genres, themes and concerns typical of different periods over the past one hundred years, connecting this to the history, before learning about key literary movements of the modern age. The class research a movement of their choice, which they did brilliantly, and we then applied all of this thinking to a GCSE text, connecting the themes and ideas in it to its literary context of 2013. They then brainstormed responses in answer to a question on language and shared these wonderfully with one another as a final task. Amazing work today- I hope you guys enjoyed learning about lots of different movements in 20th and 21st-century literature and will see you next time 🙂

Summary for Lesson 9
In today’s class we had our penultimate lesson on GCSE analysis for this course, revising and refreshing the core concepts we have learned. Each member of the class shared ideas on the key things they had learned, following up with any questions they had, and we then looked at ways to think about structural analysis in the GCSE exam. We read through key tips on how to get a 9 in English Language. Finally we completed class analysis on an unseen text, using everything we had learned to help us consider it with fresh eyes. Incredible and engaged work today everyone- good luck with your revision, let me know if you have any questions and see you next week 🙂

In today’s class we completed our mock exam in timed conditions, utilising an OCR past paper from 2022. The class wrote two essays in response to the exam paper and they were all very focused and conscientious today, working very hard. You have been excellent students over the past ten weeks class- I hope thinking through the lens of genre has helped you feel more comfortable and confident with this part of the GCSE exam. You are all doing really well in analysing and debating writers’ craft and should be proud of everything you’ve achieved- very well done!
