ParticipantSummary for Lesson 1
In today’s class we began our work on the non-fiction section of the GCSE analysis exam. We spoke about two acronyms unique to non-fiction analysis (GAP and LIST) and then used these in analysing a piece from an Edexcel past paper. We spoke about the genre of literary non-fiction, thought about close analysis of the language we were studying and worked on how to put this in context, using a method involving working backward from quotations and forming topic sentences around the overarching themes and motifs. Finally we used a summary vs. analysis exercise to help us think about the need to dig deeper under the surface of a text, using argument and analysis rather than summary and suggestion. Wonderful work today everyone- it was amazing to hear your in-depth analysis and to see the ways in which you applied the GAP and LIST techniques so intuitively. Keep up the great work and see you next week 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 2
In today’s class we continued our work on GCSE non-fiction analysis, thinking today about the comparison question. We began by thinking about how various exam boards phrase this question type, looking at the Edexcel and AQA terminology. We then examined a past paper and the class analysed the extracts using a comparison question to help them pick out topic sentences comparing similarities. We then learned about how to structure a comparison answer, before finally doing a quick quiz on comparison questions and how they function. Really well done everyone for your concentration and great ideas today. It was great to see you all, fantastic work and see you next week 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 3
In today’s class we worked on purpose, audience and tone in the GCSE exam, using these concepts to both write and analyse in order to get under the skin of these tools. We began by thinking about the terminology required in the exam, before applying this to six different forms of writing in order to unpick and analyse purpose. The class then thought about how to determine audience, before writing their own non-fiction pieces practicing changing purpose and audience and noting the effect on their writing style. We read over a model answer and finally make inferences based on this week’s paper in order to elucidate the purpose, audience and tone from the few details given at the beginning of both texts. Excellent work today class- you all came up with creative and analytical ideas throughout and I particularly enjoyed the pieces you wrote. Well done ! 🙂

ParticipantHi Zixuan,
The reason you’re confused is because I just wanted you to do question 4, which is worth 16 marks – it’s a comparison of two texts!
If you want to, you could write that question up with this in mind and if you upload it, I’ll mark it ASAP! Sorry if the instructions were confusing! 🙂

ParticipantHi Jayden,
You were only meant to answer question 4 for this week as I set out in the Powerpoint – as you answered all of them, you didn’t really get the chance to answer Q4 properly for the 16 marks. If you want, you can answer question 4 with this in mind and, if you upload it, I can mark it ASAP 🙂

ParticipantHi Siyang,
As I said to Jayden above, this week’s homework was just question 4, and as you answered the others, you didn’t get the chance to answer Q4 in enough detail for the 16 marks it demands. If you want, you can redo question 4 and I’ll mark it as soon as you do! 😀

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 4
In today’s class we did our final non-fiction lesson in preparation for our fiction lessons starting next week. We began by discussing a model GCSE answer before thinking about ten of the most important rhetorical devices to consider in a GCSE analysis context. We spoke about what rhetorical devices achieve, considering a three-step structure that helps to analyse them specifically and argumentatively (identify, specific meaning in context, relation to general themes of the text). The class applied this approach beautifully to both a short piece of poetry and a non-fiction text and I was super impressed by their writing and ability to apply the three-step process. Well done class keep up the amazing work and see you next week 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 5
In today’s class we started our work on fiction in the GCSE exam, thinking about the types of text often used. We spoke about how gothic texts, suspenseful texts, and 19th/20th-century texts are commonly used and why, reading through three examples of GCSE texts. We then discussed a step-by-step quotation analysis technique before applying this to a text on the board, picking out interesting and important uses of language to unpick and consider in terms of reader impact. Excellent work today class, well done and keep up the great work! Remember this week’s extract is on Slide 7 of the PPT attached below. See you soon 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 6
In today’s class we continued with thinking about GCSE fiction analysis, working today on different forms that analytical questions take. We read through a GCSE passage, and the class came up with their own questions based on the text. We then applied four different question types to thinking about this, looking at quotation-based questions too. We thought about the creation of suspense and the class then picked out examples of language and structure to analytically dissect from the GCSE passage. Finally we looked at the homework passages and considered any key questions. Wonderful work today class, you were all very astute and focused throughout. Thank you for all the great contributions and see you next week 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 7
In today’s class we focused on advanced literary techniques, learning about ways to dissect language when otherwise obvious language features are not there. We spoke about different types of advanced techniques such as polysyndeton, isocolon, and synecdoche, and the class tried some of these out in their own writing. We then analysed a Dostoevsky passage, looking for linguistic and structural features and identifying where there were less obvious devices being used i.e., hypophora. The class shared their analysis, we discussed different ways of talking about language and finally had a few questions to ask and answer on marks in the exam. Amazing work today class, really well done for all your intelligent analysis and really confident contribution- it was wonderful to see. See you next week 🙂

ParticipantDear Beth,
Thanks for the outstanding, excellent, incredible, stunning, wonderful, fabulous lesson.
Analysis: The use of asyndeton in the phrase “outstanding, excellent, incredible, stunning, wonderful, fabulous” suggests how the lesson took Yichen’s breath away by how amazing it was. Also, the repetition of positive adjectives in this phrase highlights Yichen’s amazement.I have a question: in the passage it had a random ellipsis in the middle. I wanted to analyse it but it looked more like an indication that the final section was from a different later part. Can you please clarify this for me?
Thanks again for the lesson. Here is my homework.

ParticipantHi Yichen,
ahah great analysis!! And in answer to your question, I think it suggests, as you say, that there is a bit skipped there. However, the exam paper doesn’t make this clear, so you wouldn’t be penalised if you made a good point about it! However, I would stay on the safe side and analyse other key bits of information that you are sure on first, as you did 😀
Super work this week, I’ve attached your feedback below. See you soon 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 8
In today’s class we completed the content section of our lessons together, thinking about imagery and atmosphere and how they relate to one another. We began by thinking about point of view, digging into how this activates a narrative, before linking this to the concepts of atmosphere, mood and tone. The class analysed a passage in light of these ideas and we finally touched on imagery, introducing some new ways through which to consider figurative language and how it communicates. Wonderful work today everyone- I particularly enjoyed hearing your analysis of point of view and how it is created. Well done and see you next week 🙂

ParticipantSummary for Lesson 9
In today’s class we had our penultimate lesson before next week’s mini mock exam, thinking today about teamwork and workshopping analysis. We began by learning about close reading and how to utilise the process before moving on to some group analysis of two GCSE passages. The class analysed and workshopped these groups together, picking out interesting uses of language and thinking about overarching themes within the texts that they were drawn to. We shared these and then engaged in a Q&A session on the GCSE exam before finally completing a summary vs. analysis task to emphasise the way in which interpretation is crucial at GCSE level. Wonderful & original work today class, well done for all your interesting analyses and ideas. Keep up the amazing work, remember to look over the older PPTs before next week and I will see you all soon 🙂
