      Summary for Lesson 1

In this week’s lesson we looked at modernising a text, focusing on Shakespeare and how to bring his work into the 21st century. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help plan and write the modern versions of Romeo and Juliet assigned for homework. The powerpoint includes information on who Shakespeare was, alonside the Shakespearean language the class learnt such as the use of words such as “thou”, “doth” and “thee”, a Shakespearean insult generator, ideas on which dramatic conventions need to be considered when looking at modernising a play (plot, characters, setting etc.) and a passage from Romeo and Juliet, with both the original version and a modern version included. Everyone worked really well in today’s lesson, I was particularly impressed by the imaginativeness of the modern versions of Romeo and Juliet that they came up with. Their Shakespearean insults were super creative and colourful, and I also loved how quick they were all in matching up early modern English words with their modern day translations, inferring their meaning from the context. Really well done everyone, keep up the amazing work and I hope to see you all again next week! Have fun writing your modern versions of Shakespeare 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 2

In this week’s lesson we looked at writing poetry, focusing particularly on rhyme and poetic techniques. The powerpoint with all of the resources is attached below, which should be used to help plan and write the poems assigned for homework. The powerpoint includes information on how to speed rhyme, how to define and differentiate between a symbol and a metaphor, the kinds of literary techniques to include in poetry (i.e. metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia etc.) and some examples of different types of poem such as limericks and shape poems. The powerpoint also contains the Langston Hughes poem that should be used for inspiration and our analysis of the rhyme scheme and meaning behind his poem. Everyone worked fantastically today, I was super impressed by everyone’s speed rhyming skills and with the limericks that they wrote in the Simon Mole workshop. I really enjoyed hearing the students’ interpretations of the theme of freedom, and thought that their understanding on rhyme was really superb. You all did an amazing job today guys, really well done and I hope you have fun writing your poems on the theme of freedom for homework! Keep up the great work, and try to watch the second Simon Mole video I have posted below if you have time. It’s only 4 minutes long and he gives you some really great tips about transforming rhyme into poetry in the video.

Here’s the Simon Mole link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePngT-NFKno

Have a lovely rest of the week and I will see you all soon 🙂

      The Freedom Poem

‘We are disables, but we are not unable’

      To the power of freedom,

It will not be controlled by a demon.

      When you have freedom,

      You will feel pleasurable.

      When you have freedom,

      It will be enjoyable.

      Once it has been taken,

      It could not be stolen.

However, once it is in your hands, people will fight for it.

      Violent and silent snatches.

If you are brave enough to take it,

You will have to be brave enough to risk it.

Wars, germs, and guns will all appear in the city right after you take it.

You have to be prepared for a freedom fight.

      freedom

Whatever you do it will have freedom,
You have the freedom to take over a kingdom,
If you don’t have freedom your heart are broking,
like kids have the right to do education and reading.

Everybody can do everything they can do,
Don’t let the no freedom split your heart in two,
Every leaving item have the freedom to do everything,
Servent had the right to run away and do anything.
