Summary for Lesson 1
In today’s class we began our work on our summer comprehension class, thinking today about how to choose quotations and different ways to think about literary techniques. We began by discussing the skills needed for the 11+ thinking about the student’s favourite and least favourite parts of the exam, before analysing the paper for this week and delving into the four different question types and what they require. We then spoke about quotation selection and how the class should choose quotes they like and think pops out to analyse before the students finally wrote their own questions which they swapped with one another. Amazing work today everyone- really impressive energy and ideas throughout. See you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 2
In today’s class we continued our work on comprehension, focusing today on the key skill of connotation. We began by thinking about what connotation is and how it applies to the 11+ before digging into how this can be tied to inference to understand the way a character is presented. We shared ideas of how to infer things about a character in a passage and then looked at the exam paper for this week, dissecting the questions using the skills we had spoken about in this lesson. Finally we spoke about how to use inference to continue a story, and shared our key learning points from today. Wonderful work class, well done for all your ideas and fab connotational analyses. See you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 3
In today’s class we focused on the key skill of inference, learning about how to think about the inferences we make in everyday life and use this skill to help us with comprehension. We began with watching a TED-ED video that taught us about the layers of inference and how we take in information and interpret it. We then applied this to this week’s paper, thinking about tone and character. We analysed a particular passage looking for interesting language and pulling out important inferences. We then looked at the paper from this week before finally doing some work on practicing P.E.E. questions. Fab work everyone- really well done for all your great ideas! You all came up with deep layers of inference today and were very engaged and sharp throughout. See you next time 🙂

Summary for Lesson 4
In today’s class we focused on theme and imagery, thinking about really solidifying our approach to analysis and digging into the notion of making arguments in our P.E.E. paragraphs. We spoke about the themes we expect to find in the 11+, looked at the themes from this week’s paper and the class learned how to use theme in P.E.E. paragraphs. We then worked through this week’s paper and workshopped one of the questions from it using our new five step analysis guide and thinking carefully about making strong points in our topic sentence. The class then all shared their paragraphs which were beautifully written- well done everyone! Amazing work today, thank you for all your brilliant concentration and sharing of ideas 🙂

Well done for all your brilliant ideas and contributions over the past five weeks everyone- you have all made such fantastic progress with your thinking and practice of comprehension. You should be proud of yourselves! See you in the next course 🙂
