Intro
Hi everyone! Thank you for a wonderful first class this term. Today we played a number of icebreaker and public speaking games to get to know each other a bit better and went through the curriculum in order to better understand the content of the course.
From now on, every week I will be updating this space with:
- A summary of what was learned/done in class
- Feedback for standout students of the week in each class
- Homework for the following week
- Occasional extra/general-interest public speaking resources you may be interested in

Seeing as this week was more focused on introductions and getting acquainted with each other, your homework for next week is to bring a joke to class 🙂 Have a wonderful week!

Intro:
Hello again everyone 🙂 This week we covered a lot in class. First, we had a lesson on the use of voice in public speaking that focused on projection, enunciation, articulation, pacing, and pauses. Then, we went on to play ‘triple speak’ – a public speaking game (that tends to be the favourite of students) in order for the students to work on thinking on their feet.
Shoutouts:
In class 1, this week’s feedback shoutout goes to Haoming – despite getting a bit flustered during his first attempt at triple speak, he came back unbelievably strong with a fantastic speech! Well done Haoming!
In class 2, we had a new student Shaopan who, despite not having met anyone in the class previously, integrated wonderfully and did a FANTASTIC job during the activities. Amazing job Shaopan!
Homework:
For homework, students were asked to come up with 3 learning goals for the course. I look forward to hearing them next week!

Hey everyone! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend, and are getting excited for week 4 of Public Speaking 🙂 Last class we focused on the use of tone in speech – what it is, why/how it’s important, different types of tones, and how to effectively modulate tone in order to successfully public speak. Everyone also shared the learning goals they came up with for homework, and we managed to squeeze in a few rounds of triple speak!
Feedback:
This week was a great week in both classes! Class 1 was super enthusiastic as always, and class 2 is beginning to become more comfortable speaking up. That said, particularly in class 2, it would be great to see everyone volunteering to answer questions more often next week
Shoutouts
In class 1, this week’s shoutout goes to Angelina – she was always on the ball, had 10/10 enthusiasm, and participated fully in all the activities. Amazing job Angelina!
In class 2, we had a couple of new students this week, and the shoutout goes to new student Hanhan who did an incredible job integrating into the class. She was a star student and shows great public speaking potential. Great work Hanhan!
Homework:
For homework, students were asked to find an example of a character in film/television who is defined by their tone of voice, and prepare to speak about it in class. For example, how their tone defines their character, how other characters react to their tone, etc. (some good examples are Severus Snape from Harry Potter and Spongebob).

Hello all! I hope you’ve had a great weekend, and are already looking forward to next weekend’s public speaking class. This week the class had an in-depth lesson on storytelling, focusing on narrative structure, various perspectives, and the importance of storytelling in public speaking. Everyone also shared the character examples they came up with for homework!
Feedback:
This week was a good week in both classes, however, many of you seemed a bit more distracted/unfocused than usual (for those of you that were focused, don’t worry, and I am very appreciative of your enthusiasm). I understand that school has started for some of you and that you’re all very busy, but it would be great to see everyone participating more actively next week 🙂
Shoutouts:
In class 1, this week’s shoutout goes to Amber! As a new student, she impressed the class with her knowledge of Shakespeare and was an active participant in the lesson at all times. I look forward to seeing her continue to grow 🙂 Great job Amber!
In class 2, this week’s shoutout goes to Shaopan for a second time! He continues to shine in class with his endless enthusiasm and strong work ethic. He is a star in the classroom and always engaged. Amazing job Shaopan!
Homework:
For homework, students were asked to call a friend (or speak to their parents) and ask for a funny story that they will be able to share with the class. The stories should be between 2-4 minutes, appropriate, and crucially, funny! The purpose of this is for the students to demonstrate what they have learned in the lessons up until this point, and use their tone and newfound knowledge of storytelling effectively whilst practicing speaking in front of the class.
Remember what we learned in the second class about projection, enunciation, articulation, and pacing!

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all having a great weekend, and for those of you with school on Monday, I hope that this week brings all sorts of adventures. This Saturday the classes presented the funny stories that they prepared for homework and did a fantastic job! In class 2, we even had time for a fun vocabulary game that we will play next week in class 1 as well.
Feedback:
In class 1 we had a fantastic time, and all of the students were engaged and prepared for their presentations. Regarding class 2, as with last week, many of you seemed a bit more distracted/unfocused than usual (for those of you that were focused, don’t worry, and I am very appreciative of your enthusiasm). I understand that school has started for some of you and that you’re all quite tired, but it would be great to see everyone participating more actively next week. I really look forward to our classes, and if everyone was a bit more engaged it would make a huge difference.

In class 1, this week’s shoutout goes to Zixuan! His story was absolutely hilarious and he had the class howling with laughter the entire time he was speaking. He really came out of his shell today and made fantastic use of our lessons on the use of voice in public speaking. Congratulations Zixuan!
In class 3, this week’s shoutout goes to Shaopan for a THIRD time! He is a leader in the classroom and an absolute joy to teach. Spectacular job Shaopan – you should be very proud of yourself!
Homework:
For homework, students were asked to do some research on an animal or mythical creature of their choice, taking note of key aspects and important facts. Next week they will give 3-minute semi-impromptu presentations on their chosen creature for the class, practicing the same quick-thinking skills that up until this point have been practiced in triple-speak games. Students are welcome (and in fact encouraged) to use notes, however they are not required nor permitted to write out full speeches. That said, presenting with some idea of structure (eg. Intro, appearance, habitat, behaviour, interesting facts, conclusion) is expected.
As always, remember what we learned in the second class about projection, enunciation, articulation, and pacing!

Intro:
Hello all! I hope you’re having a fantastic week and for those of you back to school, I hope that you’re learning lots and having a wonderful time. Last class we listened to everyone’s ‘animal rambles’ that they prepared for homework, and worked on giving constructive feedback to our peers, focusing on public speaking tools learnt in previous lessons.
Feedback:
Both classes were exceptionally well-prepared and participated to their full potential! Everyone was enthusiastic about the presentations, completely engaged, and did a great job being supportive of one another. I was especially impressed with class 2 this week, as they all came out of their shells and had the best class they’ve ever had!
Shoutouts:
In class 1, this week’s shoutout goes to Candice! She did a fantastic job preparing for her presentation, and her speech was full of information as well as humour. She did a good job giving feedback to her peers, and was attentive during everyone’s presentations. Wonderful work Candice!
In class 2, this week’s shoutout goes to the WHOLE CLASS. I’m so proud of all of you! Your presentations were well-researched and well-delivered, and you all consistently volunteered to speak. This week marked a turning point in your course and you should all be very happy with your participation. I’m very excited to see you all continue to grow and become more confident in our lessons. Congratulations guys!
Homework:
For homework, students were asked to watch some TEDTalks (speeches) on https://www.ted.com/talks and find an example of what they would consider a ‘perfect’ speech based on what we have learned thus far in class. The speech can be on any topic, humorous or serious, so long as the students believe the speaker to be giving a fantastic speech. Students are to save the URL of the speech, so that next class they can share it with their classmates, thus allowing the development of a collective bank of great example speeches.

Hey everyone! I hope this week has been wonderful for all of you. Last class we shared the TedTalks that were researched for homework, and the students explained what they were about, why they were chosen, and provided constructive criticism of the speaker. We then had a lesson on persuasive speaking, focusing on why persuasive speeches are important, the tools that allow one to be as persuasive as possible, and the why/how of persuasion.
Feedback:
This week class 2 was postponed due to some students being ill, but class 1 was fantastic. Engaged as always, and very supportive of one another. They all tried their best to answer the questions posed to them, and were consistently enthusiastic about the activities.
Shoutouts:
In class 1, this week’s shoutout goes to Angelina! She’s always a superstar in the classroom, but her confidence while speaking and determination to attempt to answer difficult questions really shined this week. Wonderful work Angelina!
Homework:
For homework, students were asked to practice their impromptu speaking with exercises taught to them in class (eg. using a random word generator, and speaking about the words that appear for 1-3 mins). Next week, we will be playing an amended (more difficult!) version of their favourite game TripleSpeak, by giving impromptu comedic persuasive speeches.

Hello all! I’m not quite sure what happened to last week’s post as it appears to have disappeared/been deleted, but if anyone wants a review of the homework and course content from 2 weeks ago, please feel free to check the syllabus at the top of this thread!
Last week in class 1, we began by sharing jokes and discussing everyone’s topics for the final presentation (yay!). Then, we went on to have our second lesson in persuasive speaking, this time focusing on the form and structure of persuasive speeches, in order to better prepare students to give their presentations.
In class 2, we played the amended (more difficult!) ‘comedic persuasive speech’ version of TripleSpeak! The students gave 4-minute impromptu speeches after 3 minutes of preparation time based on randomly generated words in order to practice thinking on their feet, and persuasive speaking. Following each speech, we had a class discussion and provided constructive criticism for each speaker.
Feedback:
Class 1 participated wonderfully, engaging in the lesson with full-enthusiasm! They were particularly happy about the opportunity to share jokes and riddles with their classmates.
Class 2 also did a great job this week, and I was VERY impressed with their participation in the impromptu speaking exercise. I realize that activities like this take them quite far out of their comfort zones, but I’m unbelievably proud of their progress.
Shoutouts:
In class 1, this week’s shoutout goes to Harry! He made the whole class laugh with his hilarious jokes, and spoke confidently, clearly, and articulately. I’m very proud of his progress and am excited to hear his final project. Amazing work Harry 🙂
In class 2, this week’s shoutout goes to Cathy! She did a fantastic job in the impromptu speech exercise, giving us a hilarious talk with a clear, persuasive aim and structure. I can’t wait to hear her final project in a couple of weeks 🙂 Great job Cathy!
Homework:
For class 1, this week is the final class, and thus the deadline for their final projects! Everyone has worked so unbelievably hard, and I’m excited to hear what they have prepared.
In class 2, homework this week is to decide on a topic for their final project, and to (optionally) bring a joke to class.
