      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s lesson, we began our journey into GCSE Literary Analysis, thinking carefully about how writers consciously construct tone, character, and atmosphere. We explored the crucial move from simply spotting techniques to asking why a writer has made specific choices, delving into connotation, implication, and the emotional “aura” of a text. Together, we worked through examples of personification, irony, and listing, analysing how each deepens meaning and creates impact. The class engaged brilliantly with the challenge of moving beyond “what” and “how” to “why,” laying the foundation for high-level analytical writing. Great start everyone- keep practising this mindset as you approach your reading and essays 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 2

In today’s class we continued our analysis lessons, thinking about subject terminology and the ways to distinguish between language, structure and form. We practiced connotational analysis, coming up with multiple interpretations, and thought about the keyword approach to quotations, picking out intentional and interesting uses of language. Excellent work today class, well done for your ideas throughout our lesson together. Keep up the fantastic work and see you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 3

In today’s class we looked at layering meaning, choosing quotations that have multiple interesting features and commenting on techniques and connotations within the scope of a wider argument. The class analysed two poems, building on each other’s analyses and identifying different ways in which each quotation could be unpicked, and finally we looked at treating yourself like a literary critic and why it is important to be authoritative with your opinion at GCSE level. Very well done everyone for your fantastic work today, brilliant contributions from all! See you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 4

In today’s class we looked at multiple interpretations and how to pick them out of quotations. We began by thinking about the importance of analysing from different angles before digging into techniques such as working from the level of the individual word. The class came up with examples and I modeled an approach to demonstrate multiple analysis points from short quotations. We practiced with a past paper and finally read through a model response, noting the different ways in which the language had been pulled apart. Well done everyone, really strong work today and some great reflections on the effect of the language we studied. Keep up the super work 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 5

In this lesson we considered structure, thinking about how to unpick and analyse structural features in a GCSE exam. We considered elements such as tonal shifts and thought about how techniques such as juxtaposition help to build and release tension in a text. The class discussed this in reference to example analysis pieces and came up with some interesting ideas of their own use of structure. Well done everyone, great work today and see you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 6

Today we continued our work on structure, delving into a passage where we carefully analysed structural features. We thought about the importance of seeing structure through the lens of different elements and features and going over some tips for how to comment on structure when stuck in an exam context. We looked at the question of why does the author show me this at this moment, discussed the analogy of the reader as a camera lens and finally followed some top tips to unpick a passage. Well done everyone, keep up the fab work and see you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 7

Today we considered comparison questions, ranging from poetry to prose, thinking about how and why the exam boards tend to ask students to compare two pieces. We discussed essay structure and how to use thematic analysis to build the essay around and then weaved together a comparative essay plan on two GCSE passages, working in small groups to compare ideas. Finally we spoke about poetry comparison and how to use form and language techniques to think through it. Amazing work everyone, well done and see you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 8

In today’s class we looked at essay writing skills for literary analysis. We spoke about the tips we would give a friend on essay writing, considering elements such as diving for deeper meaning and structuring with thesis statements, and then thought through some examiner tips on how to score Grade 8s and 9s. We workshopped this in reference to unseen poetry analysis and the class wrote sections of their own essays, pulling apart a poem from a past paper. Well done everyone, fantastic and focused work today. Keep it up and see you soon 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 9

In today’s lesson we explored how to use context effectively in GCSE literature. We began by discussing what “context” actually means, looking at historical background, an author’s life and beliefs, and the wider literary movements that shape a text. We talked about how context shouldn’t be bolted on as random facts, but woven in to support a point about language, ideas, or character. We practised this by analysing their set texts, adding contextual points to strengthen understanding of the text. Super work today everyone, very well done for all your excellent ideas. See you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 10

In today’s class we looked at unseen poetry, practicing with an unseen poem to work out a step by step guide to answering these questions on the exam. We learned tips such as using the title, registering our own emotional responses to poems, and considering poems through the lens of techniques. The class then wrote an unseen poetry response and each shared their top point or idea. Finally we put together ‘how to’ guides on the unseen and how to approach it. Fab work everyone, well done and see you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 11

In today’s lesson we focused on unseen poetry comparison, exploring how to analyse and compare two unfamiliar poems with confidence. We began by breaking down a clear, step-by-step method: examining titles, identifying initial emotional responses, and tracking how each poet uses structure, language, and form to shape meaning. We thought about how different poetic structures- such as stanza patterns, enjambment, repetition, or contrast- influence tone and message. Students wrote comparative points of their own and shared their strongest insights with the class.  Brilliant work today, well done everyone, and see you next week! 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 12

In today’s lesson, we turned our focus to crafting assured, thoughtful introductions for GCSE Literature essays, paying close attention to how an opening paragraph can set the tone for precise, insightful analysis. We discussed how an effective introduction does more than state the question: it establishes your line of argument, signals your understanding of the writer’s overarching intentions, and prepares the reader for a clear analytical journey. From there, we broke down the steps of a strong literary essay. Rather than relying on vague phrases like “interesting” or “important,” we examined how specific language, rooted in theme, technique, and effect, allows your analysis to feel purposeful and controlled. As a class, you engaged brilliantly with the challenge of articulating why a writer constructs writing, and how each choice contributes to the text’s emotional and thematic landscape. Well done and keep up the great work 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 13

In today’s lesson, we focused on developing the analytical vocabulary needed for high-level GCSE Literature responses. We explored how moving beyond words like “shows” and “tells” allows students to write with greater precision and sophistication. We examined how writers construct meaning through language, discussing how we should use evaluative language, words like highlights, intensifies, undermines, and foreshadows, helping students explain not just what a technique does, but the effect it has on the reader. Lovely work class, very well done for all your astute points. See you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 14

In today’s GCSE analysis lesson we workshopped a GCSE-style text together, focusing on how to approach exam questions with confidence and clarity. We discussed how to break down questions, identify key words, and plan effective responses. The class practised using the analysis structure for a perfect, expansive answer, thinking carefully about how to select quotations, analyse language and structure, and link ideas back to the question. Students contributed thoughtful ideas for both questions and answers, showing strong engagement and developing exam technique throughout the lesson. Great focus and collaborative work today, well done! 🙂
