      Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s class we began our writing course, thinking today about tragedy. We spoke about the three different types of tragedy, Greek, Shakespearean and modern, and dug into famous examples that the class knew. We looked at the word ‘tragedy’ and what it suggests, learning about the ancient history of it and the most important features it contains. We then looked in detail at tragic heroes and their fatal flaws, considering the way in which hamartia and fate come together in a tragedy to deliver the final, calamitous ending. Such impressive work today everyone, it was so much fun discussing tragedy in all its forms with you and hearing your brilliant analyses. Keep up the wonderful work, see you next week 🙂

      The Hero Who Didn’t Listen

A noble knight once known by all seven continents for his great bravery. His name is Gunnar. Gunnar was a tall (6,2) ,strong guy who fought in many wars. He rode on a white stallion with his shining armor on to lead his army into battles. He was well respected by everybody however he was too full of himself (he didn’t listen to anyone when given advice). In one fatal battle, he didn’t listen to his soldiers and went straight for the opposing army’s leader which ended up in him getting swarmed by the opposing army. In seconds, he started to fight for his life but he couldn’t kill them all. After one more fatal swing of a sword, he was killed.

      Summary for Lesson 2

In today’s class we finished our work on tragedy, focusing today on playwriting. We thought about tragedy and foreshadowing, looking at a description from The Great Gatsby to help us, and then talking about each of our experiences of drama and playscripts. We looked at common mistakes in playwriting and then the class planned some incredible tragedy plotlines, using a range of stimuli to help them. We also looked at an example playscript to help us think about how to translate words onto the stage. I was so impressed by their quick thinking and creativity, such amazing work everyone. Well done and see you next week 🙂

      Hi Beth,

this is my homework for the first lesson.

      The  tragic hero

Emilio, ran up to the 13th floor toilet, and barfed. Little did he know the toilet was bewitched, he only had a short time of life. Magically, what the toilet did to him was not painful at all, instead, it made him cozy and well. He became kinder and gave his girlfriend a pink rose 🌷.

One day, he even planned to one day marry his girlfriend and give her the best thing in the world, after that thought, he went to school and asked his girlfriend with his face red and looking at the floor. “Umm…Hi……would you m..m…m..marry me? Sorry if this is very weird.”

“OMG really of course I will marry you! This was the sentence I was waiting for you to say ages ago!”

“Really? I thought you didn’t want to marry me at all!”

“Nonsense, anyway, let’s now try and invite people to our wedding hopefully this week!”

      “great idea let’s go!”

So just like that Emilio is going to have a wedding party with I think they invited 18 people to.

It is finally the day! People got dressed up beautifully to come to this special party where there’s a GINORMOUS cake with a statue of a men and a women ball dancing on top and a crystal kind of waterfall on the side of the cake and realistic 2D trees on the side. The girl was in a long white gown with flowers on top. On the other hand, Emilio was wearing a black and white tuxedo with a black bow on it. After a while when they wanted to kiss each other, they standed face to face one meter away from each other, and then they walked at the same time two steps, and then kis… Before there lips even touched! Emilio got entirely out of breath and fell to the floor. He was dying! The woman checked if he was breathing and was not, and she also asked him other thing and he was completely unresponsive! after the check, the woman started to do the chest compressions  on Emilio while the other people called 999. Unfortunately, before 999 even came, Emilio died. The woman fell on her knees and cried. Her tears weren’t just drops, they were pouring down, she cried for exactly 9 hours straight, nonstop! And just like that the woman was left alone with no family and zero friends left 💔.

I hope you have a nice week. See you next Monday!

      Chapter 12

The wind blew harshly on Oliver’s face, the cries of the birds could be heard clearly. Oliver was on his way home, completely unaware that a war was happening in the forest. He was proud to be a hero of world war 2. All of a sudden, a fire blazing trough the trees startled him. The war had not yet ended. Immediately Oliver began to flee, while preparing his gun, for he knew he would have to fight. He can across an abandoned graveyard… Somebody pounced on his back, holding a gun to his head. Oliver knew it was his end, he quickly scribbled something down on a piece of paper, the let him meet his fate. A year later, a commanding officer found that piece of paper, and on it wrote his will. “Take my body back to my family, and bury me where I died…

      King Edward’s Plan

King Edward decided to ask all the greatest soldiers in the world if they will do a quest for 1000 coins and the one that completes the quest will be know as the greatest soldier of all time. All the soldiers agreed until they heard what they needed to do, killing King Edward’s oldest daughter (Mary Stuart). After hearing that, thousands of soldiers abandoned the idea. That left only ten more individuals, who were willing to do whatever they had to do.

This is when King Edward decided to tell his youngest child (Elizabeth). So he told her to meet in his room to talk. He whispered to her that he was going to kill Mary. She was horrified that her father would think about killing her sister. As she thought about it, she realised that her sister wanted to get rid of her. She asked what the plan is. He told her that she was going to choose one soldier to sneak into Mary’s bedroom and stab with a sword in her sleep. Elizabeth said she will choose the most worthy soldier to do the job.

As the night came the princess choose the soldier and brought him to her sister’s room. He walked in and stabbed the figure in the bed. It turned out that her sister knew about the plan all along and know she didn’t want to see her family ever again so she decided she was going to move to Scotland.

Hi Beth this is my homework for the second lesson.

      The king’s final day.

Bedoris (the king): Ahh is such a loverly summer da…..SPLASH! Hey watch it boy!

Avalina (the kings daughter) : Put a nice big blue towel on Bedoris’s body.

Bedoris :thank you Avalina, I appreciate it very much.

      Avalina: It’s fine dad.

      Bedoris: AAAAACCCHHHUUUUUUUUUU!

      Avalina: DAD ARE U OK?!

      Bedoris: *coughs* no not really.

Avalina: Dad, quickly, you must be sick! Let’s go back and you can stay on your bed and rest a bit.

Bedoris: ok *goes on the carriage*.

Avalina: Quick soldiers, help me carry him up to his golden bed!

Bedoris: I can’t thank you enough my Avalina.

      Avalina: Don’t think about it.

      Bedoris: Whatever you say.

      Avalina: *laughs*.

Bedoris: I’ll be waiting for you to send me food my love.

Avalina: Of course, I’ve actually just learnt a new delicious recipe for you to try!

Bedoris Amazing I’ll be rating it after I try it!

      Avalina: I’m sure you’ll give it a 10\10!

      Avalina: *finished cooking*.

      Bedoris: mmmmm…It’s definitely a ten.

bedoris: *clears his throat* And suddenly faints!

      Avalina: OMG! Are you ok?!

Bedoris: …*no response* HE WAS DEAD!!!

Avalina: fell to her knees and stabbed herself with a knife in the royal kitchen and killed herself. This Kingdom has no more hope, all the royal people are gone, the kingdom had no money and people was starved to death, Bedoris and Avalina remains in Heaven.

      THE
      END

      Summary for Lesson 3

In today’s class we began work on our second genre of the course: epics & odes. We learned about what both of these genres of poetry were, tracing them back to ancient Greece and discussing some examples. The class learned about the epic poem ‘The Odyssey’ and thought about how this connects to mythology. We then did some work on heroes, and the students came up with amazing heroic characters of their own, considering how to make them feel epic and compelling. Finally we thought about the structure of an epic and features such as invocation to a muse and starting in medias res. Wonderful and sophisticated work today everyone, I particularly loved the heroic characters you came up with. Such impressive work- well done 🙂

      Hi Beth,

Here is my homework for this week. It is about the hero (The king) discovering his fate and reacting to it.

Background information: The king sees that the rich are mistreating the poor, so he plans to take away from the rich and give it to the poor. The wealthy people want revenge by killing the king, so they coaxed the Dragon Kingdom, which is a kingdom next to them, to send a dragon here and kill the king.

      Hi Beth,

this is my homewwork for lesson 3.

      Epic Poem (seasons)

The wind, the snow, the sky and the rain.

      Are you gonna stay?

The trees are dancing in the strangest way.

The leaves, the trees, the acorns, the wind.

Ready to seek the acorns little squirrel!

The leaves like claws, moving in the sky.

don’t get catched by the scary claws!

The rain, the bees, the bloom and the sky.

The nice fresh air pulls itself through rain.

A boy comes through the waterfall.

PSHHHH he got nice and wet.

“I love it” said the boy.

The beach, the sunshine, the ice cream and the vacation.

boy has an ice cream and melted in his hands.

He got thirsty but there was no water.

He was dehydrated so he died.

Poor him, he should have another chance.

I guess he will remain hating summer.

      Have a lovely week!

      Summary for Lesson 4

In today’s class we continued thinking about Ancient Greek forms and learnt about the Ode. We discussed what makes an ode, thinking about poetic structure, the subject of odes and how they can be personal or universal. The class watched a video explaining the difference between different types of ode and we read examples of all three- Horatian, Pindaric and irregular. We then came up with ideas for what to write an ode on, thought about the difference between odes and elegies and finally the students planned in their pairs some amazing odes, writing the first stanzas beautifully. Amazing work class, very well done and I can’t wait to read your homework! See you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 5

In today’s class we began work on the genre of creative non-fiction. We began by discussing what the genre is, thinking about what makes something story-worthy. We learned different mediums to write creative non-fiction in, from memoirs to autobiographies to narrative articles. The class shared their own experience of having read or written creative non-fiction and we read an example from Roald Dahl’s autobiography thinking about how he takes the every day and makes it extraordinary. We finally brainstormed some ideas and read some tips to help shape creative non-fiction. Well done everyone, you’ve all been really creative and hardworking today. Have fun with the reading and see you next week 🙂

Here is the homework PDF- just a quick note, Maya Angelou uses the word ‘negro’ to describe how people described Black people at the time. This is now not a word we would use because it is outdated and can be upsetting- so just be aware of that!

There’s a word tattoo in the text and another hidden can you find it?

have a nice week. It’s quite short by the way.

      Ode poem

      There once were two turkeys,

And they wanted to eat cheese.

The cheese smelled pungent and delicate.

They started to eat it and asked if they could date.

Oh, said the girl. Please said the boy.

OMG we should cried the girl.

Just like that they went together.

The only turkeys that were in their country,

      Went to eat dinner.

After they went to a tattoo shop.

And had half a heart on a different elbow each.

      Summary for Lesson 6

In today’s class we completed our work on creative nonfiction, thinking about analysing the ways in which memoirs can speak to wider themes and ideas. We analyzed the homework article, thinking about how Maya Angelou makes a wider and deeper point about systemic racism through her childhood stories, and the class read an essay looking at tips for writing in this genre. They then planned out their own ideas for things from their life that could speak to universal themes and we finished by thinking about the 5 R’s for creative nonfiction. Lovely work today everyone, really creative ideas for your own memoirs! It was great to see you all today, very well done for all your great group work too. See you next week 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 7

In today’s class we began work on campaign writing, discussing how to think through political campaigning as an expression of things we care about. We began by learning about how to be an activist for issues the class are passionate about, discussing what makes a good campaign and learning some key tips and tricks. The class came up with their own campaigns, digging into the personal reasons they care about the issues they were fighting for, and then conducted some great research on their subjects. We spoke about slogans and their important and touched on the need for persuasion in this genre. Well done everyone, lovely work today – I can’t wait to hear all about your campaign ideas next week! 🙂

      Summary for Lesson 9

Today we had a writer’s workshop, revising the four genres from this course. We spoke about our feelings on each genre and then connected this to some key writing tips from famous writers. We thought about the process of planning pieces, digging into the way in which different ways of thinking can be expressed, and the class then worked in small groups to plan a piece together, working from a genre of their out of tragedy, epics & odes, creative non-fiction and campaign writing. Really amazing work today everyone, particularly on the planning of your pieces. Very well done and good luck with your revision 🙂

      Hi Beth,

This is my mock exam writing.

Bye Bye have a lovely time

      Tragedy story (mini mock)

Helena lived suspiciously happy with her grandparents. Her grandparents gave her food and welcomed her to be in this family and have fun and have manners. But what Helena doesn’t know is that she is adopted and her “grandparents” actually hate her and is trying to have a plan to kill her because they hate her and also for fun. the “grandparents” were actually secretly trained to be killers, VERY skilful killers. They thought while Helena is sleeping, they made a potion that looks exactly like water to make Helena feel absolutely nothing while asleep and will leave her paralysed for at least one hour and a half. Al they plan to do is to buy the sharpest knife in the whole world on the internet. Helena slept until 10:34, which gives them plenty of time to get ready. After Helena woke up, the breakfast was ready and she drank it in a second, she got paralysed and the “grandparents” used the sharp knife and without thinking just stabbed it into Helena’s heart and just like that, she sadly died with no one thinking about her.

      Summary for Lesson 10

Today we completed our mini writing mock, finishing up our autumn course together. I was so impressed by the students’ focus and their perceptive points today and through the past ten weeks; they have all taken on the challenge of lots of sophisticated genres and have come up with wonderful and original work in response. Very well done everyone, it has been a joy teaching you this course and I will see you in the next one! 🙂
