Summary for Lesson 1

In today’s lesson we began our GCSE literary analysis course, thinking about connotational analysis. We dug into the relationship between connotation and symbolism, thought about how to utilise this to understand and make inferences about imagery and applied this to a GCSE passage. The class did some brilliant partner work where they looked at a past paper using their connotation skills and we thought about famous examples from literature. Incredible work everyone, very well done- I really enjoyed hearing your ideas and analyses. Keep it up and see you next week 🙂

Lesson 1:

In general, the main character is shown as a keen, well-mannered, and scornful through figurative language such as hyperboles.

Firstly, the author shows the main character as a well-mannered gentleman by using a great literary device: personification, the author wrote, ‘so she couldn’t see his small pity and greater contempt’, The main character Theo makes an effort to hide his contempt from his face, this is most likely because he is trying to show the act of courtesy. This makes him a polite gentleman who cares about other people’s inner emotions.

Secondly, the author presented Theo (the main character) as keen and curious by using hyperbole: Theo found that couldn’t keep his eyes off it. The crucial fact is that even though he is horrified by the doll, he is still looking at it, which shows Theo’s curiosity and therefore he is a curious person.

Beside that, the author used the device of minimization to present that Theo is a bit scornful: Theo, more depressed and disgusted by the charade then surely such harmless play-acting justified, was turning away. The word disgusting has bad or, other words, negative connotations, where Theo was expressing hatred towards the doll. The second bit of the phrase I chose was: surely such harmless play-acting justified. This made the doll seem unnatural or monster-like, which also has negative connotation of both the doll and Theo, it has negative connotation on the doll because the words made him/her ugly, and also has negative connotation on Theo  because he is thinking about bad things of the doll, or he could have thought about good things about it but he didn’t, this shows that he is hateful or scornful towards the doll.

Summary for Lesson 2

In today’s class we focused on techniques, thinking about symbolism and extended metaphor in depth. We discussed literary techniques and how we should treat them analytically before moving onto diving into the concept of symbolism as the bedrock of many other devices. We learned about extended metaphor, worked in groups on a list of 100 advanced techniques and finally the class applied all their knowledge to a GCSE extract. Well done today everyone, fab work and concentration throughout. See you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 3

In today’s class we concentrated on the nuts and bolts of how to use quotations to structure a GCSE analysis paper. We began by thinking about how to choose interesting quotations before watching part of a video that looked at how to embed them in essays. We learned about the intention-quotation-effect method to ensure good analysis and practiced this with two poems, looking at example answers. The class read a table that showed good and bad examples of how to use quotes and finally, they read an article on key tips for analytical essay writing. We then applied this to a passage before finishing up. Good work today, keep digging into the deeper meaning of things, remembering to comment on literary techniques and remember practice makes perfect! Keep it up class, see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 4

In today’s class we began our work on non-fiction analysis, thinking about form and medium. We discussed why these are important to bear in mind before looking at the key elements to consider when dissecting a piece of non-fiction. We looked at key examples of this using opinion pieces in newspapers before talking about key questions to ask ourselves to help us get to the bottom of the way a writer has constructed a piece. Finally they analysed an article and completed their own writing inspired by it, changing up the intention of the piece and seeing how it impacted the way they used language. Well done today class, I particularly enjoyed your analyses of the articles you chose. Keep up the great work & see you next week 🙂

Summary for Lesson 5

In today’s lesson we continued work on non-fiction, thinking specifically about comparative questions and how to think about context. We began with some group discussions of the homework, before sharing as a class, and then thinking about the kinds of questions to ask in order to understand a non-fiction text in context. We looked at this with reference to a past paper and then dug into comparison questions and how they function. The class finished by discussing and considering multiple different types of non-fiction GCSE texts before we looked at Dickens and why exam boards use him so much in the non-fiction exam. Well done today everyone, fab analysis of the ways we can compare two very different texts. Keep it up and good luck with revision! 🙂
